jimmy vs. cai

Ok first off I'm sorry to be posting about this cause it's prolly been run into the ground, but I don't feel bad enough not to ask

I'm looking into getting an intake for my 92 and well, i just want some imput.

Is there a big difference between something like a Jim Wolf Pop-charger and a CAI? I'm guessing there is some gain differences between the two, but are the gains big enough with the CAI to justify the $100-150 difference?

Suggestions? Thanks

Yes indeed this has been covered once or twice.

Jim Wolf = High end gain (warmer air, less dense), CAI = Low end gain (cooler air, more dense), some claim gains all the way through with the CAI. People say the hybrid is the way to go. Don't know much about it though. Appears to give both high and low end gains.

Buy both. During the summer run the CAI, and during the winter run the POP.

The hybrid consists of an aftermarket upper intake tube and a POP charger. That is why I said buy both the POP and CAI and then you have 3 choices. POP, CAI, or Hybrid.

The stock upper intake tube has a resonator which muffles air flow noise and can possibly restrict air flow. The aftermarket ones don't have resonators creating a smooth airway to the throttle body. Hope this helps.

JWT is an excellent POP charger. Stillen is made of higher quality billet aluminum but they both offer the same gains. I went Stillen because they use a genuine K&N filter. I wasn't sure if JWT did at the time of purchase. Now that I think about it I could have just bought the JWT and swapped filters. You learn as you go along right.

I think I paid around $165 +shipping for my Stillen. I bought mind from Avalon Racing. http://www.avalonracing.net/ Go to their site and scroll down to the bottom and click on the "Online Store" link. Then click on: Jim Wolf Technology > POP Chargers > Page 2. For the Stillen High Flow goto: Online Store > Nissan > "Maxima" (not Maxima 00~ or 95-99) > Page 3.

Their website shows they are selling the JWT POP for $100.80, which I am sure is the correct price. You might wanna call them to find out.

Avalon is a respectable company, and I have ordered several products from them with no hassles. Plus, you don't have to pay sales tax which is especially nice because I am from California.

there isnt a real big difference in price from the CAIs to the advertised POP. The warpspeed CAI is only $150 with K&N filter. Now if you wanted to make your own POP then that is pretty easy and cheap.

If you buy a CAI then you really don't need a popcharger. I bought the PR CAI and I now just run the upper pipe with the K&N. That is the same as a hybrid, with the exception that I don't have the "velocity stack" found on the JWT intake.

I'm up at school and 2 hours from my home and garage, do you think a muffler shop would know or be able to install a CAI, or should I not trust their install? I'd go to Tuffy if anyone has heard of them.

no I dont have it but will be getting it before too long. It will be my first mod AFTER the car is painted but am spending all my money to get the car painted.

as far as getting a muffler shop to do it...that would be fine but only if they use a mandrel bender and if they can look at some kits to copy it. I believe that is all that the Warpspeed CAI is...mandrel bent 3" exhaust pipe.

Oh ok. I would do it myself if I were you. They come with the instructions and a diagram of where to cut. If you arent comfortable cutting or dont have the tools then a good muffler shop should be able to do it with no problems.

Ok. I'm pretty sure I could do it, just that I'm at my apartment 2 hours from home and my dad's tools.
