Hole in 5 spd Tranny...Advice?
Hole in 5 spd Tranny...Advice?
Well, I pulled my transmission yesterday (not a fun job) to change my clutch and to see where I was spewing oil from, I found a HUGE hole in the bell/clutch housing. It's about 1 1/2" X 1 1/2", though it you can see the diff gears. Also, upon further inspection of the casing, there are huge scores, as well as a puncture of the case (I can see through it) near the clutch fork boot. Unfortunately there are no leftovers from the hole or what caused it.
This leaves me with no tranny. I assume that my options at this point are purhcasing a new tranny from the dealer or a used one from???any suggestions??? Also, does anyone know if it is possible to mate a 6 spd box up in the 5 spd's place? Just trying to explore all of my options. All suggestions are welcome. TIA.

I have no idea! Well, I know when it happened, but just not how. I was getting on the highway, in 3rd gear. Some jackaz in an X5 totally cut me off (there was no one else on the highway-11:30pm
) so I was going around him, not even in that big of a hurry or revving it more than 5500 rpms. I put it in 4th, then 5th soon after, and the clutch started slipping badly. I smelled something burning, and noticed that there was smoke coming from under the car. I made it home fine, but the back end of the car was covered in oil (just waxed it that afternoon) and she left big oil marks on the driveway. BTW I was using a Centerforce Dual Friction clutch. Also I didn't hear anything when it happened...

The piece that is missing is probably inside your tranny.
You certainly need at least a new case. I would recommend that you open up your trany to determine if the internals are good or not.
If the internals are ok, then obtain a new case half from Nissan ($ ???) or purchase a junkyard "bad" 5spd ($250 approx) and swap your good internals into the good case.
If you aren't confident about rebuilding a tranny yourself, then go buy a junkyard "good" tranny ($800 approx) with as much warranty as you can squeeze out of them. Borrow a dial gauge and check the diff bearing and input shaft endplay against specs (pm me/ask here if you need the specs/technique) before you accept the tranny if possible, but at elast before you install it. Replace the two driveaxle seals ($8/ea) and bolt that sucker up.
If you want to swap up to LSD then the p/s driveaxle is different, ISTR.
If you have plenty of money, a professionaly rebuilt tranny ($2000) with a long warranty is good peace of mind. Or you could buy one from nissan ($2700)
