So i went to the track today, and compared the data to my last trip.
Here are the results. I will list specs for my last trip first then my trip today.

the last time at the track I ran with my JWT popcharger, everything else is identical on the car.

I know to some of you this does not sound too dramatic, but for the more seasoned track goers, this should seem huge. I had the temp. humidity and elevation working against me. If the conditions were exactly the same I KNOW i could have gotten another tenth off my time at least. This has given me all the info I needed to put further research into this product. I am now looking for a bone stock maxima in alabama to be fitted with the first true prototype, which will include a fiberglass heatsheidl/collector, and a much more refned
look than my original version.

Is the only option for it to be in the headlight?

 

it also draws air from the fender well when the headlight is in place. The position gives it the biggest benifits. After this one has been developed I have plans to develope a cool air intake that retains factory filter placement. However it will not be as effective, but should still be better than the JWT intake. Keep in mind, I plan on this product costing only about $50 more than the JWT popchargeer as well. and that includes, filter, heat sheild/ collector, MAF adapter, midpipe, battery relocation kit, and all couplings and hardware. I hate to sound too optimistic, but this could rival the budget Y pipe as biggest bang for the buck product for a stock maxima.

 

I believe MZMTG was like four tenths off his normal times with the poor track conditions today.

 

Yes, the conditions today were horrible. My best is 15.1 with just an intake. I've since added a Ypipe and couldnt do better than 15.6 today. For Davy to beat his record, the intake must me effective.

Curious, does the heat shield really reduce the hot air for the intake? The intake is drawing air from the engine area. Is not like, it is drawing air from elsewhere.

 

yes it is drawing air from elsewhere.I am not saying that the filter is sealed from the engine compartment air, but I would say under normal road use.(headlight in) there would be less than 20 air intake from the engine compartment, with the majority being in the form of flowing exterior air.

It was deadly hot.

 

automagics hate heat alot worse than 5spds too, thats part of the reason I didn't go yesterday, my car loses about 3 tenths in the hot weather like that. Ben...is your car only fast when its 20F?

 

When it's in the 80s I usually run in the 15.3-15.4 range. So yeah, I'm only fast on 40 degree nights.

I was so down on power, I couldn't even get the tires to spin, even a little.

 

My only question is how fast do you run with just a JWT/hybrid. When you pull the headlight you get considerably more air regardless of which intake you have. Jime's intake is pretty cool as well, but I'm not really seeing enough gains to warrant turning the battery 90*, removing the headlight, and spending more money on intake piping.

good job man! that really makes a big difference. so your headlight was in place when you ran?
Is that setup louder than other intakes?
Is there more risk for that intake to suck up water?

It's not any louder than any other intake.

It won't suck up water.

Great job with that intake. Most people dont see it but with those weather conditions it really made a difference. Not to criticize but what if you put an inverted filter in there? An inverted one would receive air just like that one and head on into the filter as well. It may not be a day and night difference but it might draw in a little more air. Just my .02

 

man that is exactly what I want to do. I just made this prototype to work around my popcharger. The final product will incluce a large cone filter with an inverted end. It will also have a heat resistant fiberglass collector that doubles as the MAF adapter. I am telling you, and mark my words, this could rival the Y pipe for most bang for the buck upgrade.

Keep us posted, I've been wanting to relocate my battery and remove the headlight for drag racing for some time now. Just haven't gotten around to doing it. How long does the removal of the headlight alone take. I haven't looked at it close enough to have any idea.
