Water in spare tire wheel well???

I just checked out this 2003 Maxima SE today (I'm shopping around for a 02-03) and discovered that it had like 4-5 gallons of water in the spare tire well. Owner was surprised to see it himself. There were some wet spots on the side interior of the trunk carpet but not too high. Is this a known problem?

Yeah...we still need an explanation, not a temporary solution

This is not a typical problem on the Maxima. Most likely spots for the water to come in is from around the tail lights or maybe the trunk lid seal, but unlikely. Good thing, if the car has less than 36k miles, its under warranty. Have the owner get it fixed before buying.

had the same problem with my 91 sentra.. water would come in around the taillights.. but more like a cup or two.. not 4-5 gallons worth. You sure he didn't leave the trunk open or something?

The trunk seal may be bad but since it's a fairly new car it should'nt be bad that quick. However you may check if the car has been in a wreck thus trunk alignment may be off a bit causing water to get in there or from the lights.
