Surface Fatigue on Idler Pulley

When I swapped my Napa V-Belt with the Dayco Poly Cog belt I noticed some fatigue in the aluminum idler pulley. If you hold the pulley against a light background you can see a slight concaving going on one side of the surface which is on the opposite side of the bearing retaining clip. The surface I'm talking about is the part in contact with the belt. Hope that makes sense. Its as if the belt was too tight on one side causing the surface to concave. I was tempted to put back in the plastic one but I flipped the aluminum one over instead. Anybody else notice that going on with their pulley?

Hi again!
I wouldnt go back to the palstics..... but my pulley is like that too...a little bit concaving on where the belt lands. Have you looked into getting a lexus pulley? few here are using it. ask Danny, (PCguru2k) for more info.

Change it before it gets this bad (even if you have to put back the newer plastic type)...

This left the owner stranded in SoCal (with a little help from a "straight" drainback hose oil leak/crack.)

hmmm....just wondering, what happened to the car of the pulley owner? did the belt get shredded?

Yes... his "vacation" was extended and I had to call a favor to get my mechanic to open on a Sunday after towing it Saturday night to the shop.

I always thought that a bit of concaving like that can help on belt alignment....I guess I am wrong.

Holy crap !! I can't believe these aluminum pullies are causing problems now too... we should force stillen to get us good replacement pulleys free of charge for making us live with these plastic ones (yeah, right!).

I think I'll look at my plastic pulleys today while the motor is lifted

The weird part is that I put these on last November. You'd think they would last longer than that.

I should have taken pics as well but I was more focused on getting the car in running order again. Luckily mine didn't look as bad as the pics above! Since November I had on the Stillen tensioner pulley with the aluminum idler pulley and the Stillen pulley is still performing well!

Vincent, don't forget the bolt and drainback hose, too. Bolt is about $3 and the hose is $25 from Stillen.

Glad you made it back to school.

Yeah the Lexus pulley's are nice.. It's big and fat. There used on the LS300's and they can withstand a lot of pressure from the belts. Bearing's are a lot bigger too. It's about $60 from MaximumTuning here in LI, nYC

did you replaced both tensioner and idler pulley to lexus ones? do you have to use longer belt for these big pulleys?

I switched my ASP alums out for the Stillen plastic ones a month ago trying to fix a squealing but it appears there is something else wrong instead of the assumed problem of grease being cleaned out of the ASP's by brake cleaner like I thought...

ASP pulley is wonderful I did that cleaned them with brake cleaner, you know we Marines got to clean ****, and here is what you need to do. Go buy the pliers to remove that retaining pin. place a fat metal socket in the center of the pulley where the bearing is facing upward hit the pulley very hard with a rubber mallet to remove the bearing, take that bearing to NAPA and they will get you a new one, lube it up with high temp grease and push it in there and put the pin back in with the pliers. Pulley is now fixed and functional. Simple your done

well the plastic pieces of **** failed miserably on me yesterday...

what junk...lasted two weeks...and both are trashed...anyhow i put a new belt and the stock pulley back on and cleaned everything to the T and it still makes the freaking noise and I cannot run the AC...cause it screams...I will have to look into changing the actual AC belt now...it seems easy enuff.

ensure the belt is not rubbing on the plate, I had that problem thinking it was a bearing from the alternator and one of the master techs from nissan looked at my car prior to taking it apart and informed me that the belt was touching my fault for not shaving enough off the plate

well I am back to the original size 3.6 pulley and have made zero boost til I ge tthis squeak fixed as I am sick of it...it sounds only when the car sits for a while an dcomes from the front of the alternator on is intermittent...I measured and compared clearance on the tensioner pulley before install..but may as well still shim it with a washer just to make absolutely certain it is not that which is causing the noise...the ASP pulleys are back on the car cause the plastic ones are not useable anymore...at least the Tensioner one is shot all the way.

At least you had a reason to replace those two bolts...

Did you replace the bearing on the ASP pulley before putting it back in? If you have the part#, please post it.
