EDIT: Keep in mind the pic selection isnt really fair cuz the top is a tinted 2001 AE max at an agressive angle. The second pic is a normal max, no tint, boring angle.

I voted "without", but it's not even a matter of looks. You see, the deflector will *** up the paint on the roof as dirt gets trapped under it and as it moves at high speeds, rubbing the dirt against the paint.
On top of that, the sunroof comes with its own "built-in" wind deflector, which keeps the noise to a minimum, so having the bigger one is somewhat of an overkill (unless you're planning on having the roof open at >65 mph).

I agree with everything vito said. In fact, if you already own the car and have been driving around with the deflector for a while it might be too late to take it off. I took mine off after only 40 miles and already the dirt and grime had began to accumulate under the deflector. Luckily the couple scratch marks I had were light and on the surface so they all buffed out. I'll take wind noise over a ruined roof anytime.
Well, explain to the woman that it will mess up the paint on the roof, and at that point, you'll be stuck having that thing up there to cover up the damage.
Also, they tend to crack really easy, so you may be looking at replacements every so often (rumor had it that Nissan switched vendors, and that perhaps the new shipments are more durable, but I've yet to hear any feedback about that).
I think you will get an overwhelming number of people telling you to go without it.

funny you say that.. I spoke to dave B. the part guy, and he gave me a specific part # for the deflector cuz he said there was a "big problem" with prior deflectors. he said to be careful when buying one

Is the woman going to have the final say? Cause if so, this thread is worthless!

I get last say, but i always let her get her say in. The max is a common interest between us. I actually plan to use this thread to gently persuade her it is better without it
i drive my car on the highway at 75+ with the sunroof open and it is very quite with the deflector...that's the only reason why i have it
with out the deflector at 75 the noise is unbearable with the roof opened
yes it is ugly yes it screws with the paint if you dont take it off periodically to clean it, but it serves a very good purpose in my book

I had mine on for over 5k and it had damage that mostly buffed out. You have to look real close to see anything. Mine came on the car when new. I wish I'd a known about it sooner...
A buddy of mine has on one that has around 15k on it. It has cracked and been replaced once, don't know if it's the newer one or not, the damage to his paint is catastrophic. It has eaten through the paint at all points of contact and in some places clean through to the metal.
Shame on Nissan for this one. This is the sorriest piece of crap on the car. Yes I know there are other sorry things to this car but to my knowledge none of them do damage like this. Get it off ASAP.

I don't think it takes away from the visual appeal too much. I've had mine on the car 3 1/2 yrs (from the factory) and never had a problem. I have the sunroof open at all possible times so I love the noise reduction it gives.
That being said... if you have one on, leave it. If you don't have one and the noise is not a problem, leave it off.

I was going to take mine off last weekend, but got frustrated when i couldn't find the right wrench to hold the nuts. This was after I washed the car. (why I didnt' try to take it off BEFORE washing, I couldn't tell ya)
Well mine's been on since I bought the car last year. I have 43k now and I did take it off once last year to wax under it, but I don't remember how the paint damage was. I know there were some chips where the brackets hold the deflector one. I'll see this weekend I guess.

now whos the a-hole?!
I took mine off yesterday when I waxed the car. Suprisingly after 43k miles, the damage left by it isn't bad. Just a line on the surface where the rubber seal was and 2 chips on the inside of the roof where the brackets were. I sanded them down and touched it up. No prob!
If anyone wants to buy my deflector, PM me.
