Just a lot of elbow grease. You can esentially use anything. The most important thing is to use an engine degreaser, a citrus based one is highly recommended (Eimann Fabrik). Also, have a spray bottle with water, Q-tips, lots of terry clothes, and about 1-1.5 hours of time.

Yea, my friend uses Simple Green and says it removes grease very well.

You don't necessarily want to use Simple Green. I used to be an avid user of it, but I learned that Simple Green is harsh on clear coats and rubber. It will deteriorite it over time due to the strong cleaning chemicals. That's why citrus-based cleaners are more recommended than anything else.

Alternator, battery, intake, any wires you can get to, visible harnesses. You can use foil, plastic bags, etc. You can spray some electric connection grease (spray can) which displaces water if you're really paranoid.

I just did this last weekend for the first time! Simple Green is ****ing horrible. It stained all my hoses badly and I will definitely not be using it on my engine again.

I covered up the battery and intake...forgot about the alternator! NOT GOOD. I was pertty careful with where the water was going and I used pretty low pressure though, so everything was cool. Next time I will be more careful, although I'm not sure if I'm going to bother with ALL of the electrical connections...there are a hell of a lot of them and some are hard to cover. After I did this I used the compressor to blow a lot of the water out...which was helpful.

Auto Zone is good for one thing, the Engine Degreaser they have at the counter for 2.00 a can. I use 2 cans on my engine and low pressure and I almost never have to wipe anything down. NO stains like SG either.

we have no distributor... the alternator is on the bottom left front of the motor (standing looking at the front of the engine)

Use gunk foamy engine brite, and afterwards CD2 engine detailer to moisten up the hoses again. IT works great. The gunk foamy engine brite dries up the rubber, so watch out. U have to use the CD2 afterwards.

Can be found at any K-mart as a two pack, Engine cleaner and engine detailer. I think I've seen the detailer @ walmart too.

CD2 is just a brand name. Just make sure to cover up the battery, alternator, air box/filter, and any other wiring that you aren't comfortable with being wet. Make sure the engine isn't hot. Use the gunk all over, and let it sit. Then rinse off. Don't use any power hose or anything like that. I used an old ketchup bottle and filled it with water, so I can control it more. Then spray the CD2 all around and drive it around for a while and let it soak in.

The CD2 engine detailer works great, but isn't the solution for cleaning the entire engine.

I use simple green and follow up with CD2. The simple green will stain if its used on a warm or hot engine!! That's probably why that one guy had stained hoses.

Hmm...it was a hot day but the car had been sitting other than moving it 10 feet from the street to the driveway. It was cool to the touch, but maybe the heat of the day was enough...could be!
