By-passing the 99' ECU

From what I have gathered the 99' Maxima's have a some how different ecu from the rest. At any rate JWT nor any one else that I know of makes a preformance ecu for the 99's. The biggest problem is that if you get a MIVI or any other mod that helps the engine breath, the power is placed further up in the power band. Us 99 owners can't get there with the stock ecu.

Some say we just have to live with it. - I find this to be wrong since there is always some way to fix a problem with deep enough pockets. Hopefully this can be done reasonably

Some say that there are other modules that can control your rev limit. The person sugested a product from sumitracing.com. I looked at it and it seemed to limit reving only if the car didn't have one. I am not certian on this so feel free to correct me. This may work if you can find a way to disable the cars rev limiter, and you will still be able to keep the rpm at "safe" limits.

I have also heard that the speed limiter can be removed by similiar products - I have not had a chanse to look into these - some are mentioned on the "VQ35 exhaust manifold on a 4th gen" thread.

Performance wise Apexi make fuel maping modules that help. I have never heard of any one using one but it looks good on papper. This can be found on Apexi's site.

Well here are the ideas that i have heard. Any one know the real answer?
Poast away...

Well...I have a 99 as well. It doesn't look good for us. I'm not positive, but I would think you can't just get rid of the rev limiter. For one it's internal coding. Second, the engine needs to know what to do up there in order to work. Without some kind of fuel and timing map for the revs above 6500 then computer wouldn't know how to react (unless one exists from Nissan, doubtful). I don't see any feasible way to modify the rev limiter with our existing ECU's without the help from professional tuners.

I was more inclined to see the difference between the 99 and the 95-6's ECU. I can't get my hands on both FSM's so I haven't had a chance to do much checking. With a manual transmission I could see it possible. The big thing is how emissions is going to work. They are not as different as people think. There are distinct differences, but nothing that couldn't be over come by replacing some sensors (although possibly costly) One would need both manuals to compare the parts and see if what part numbers are the same and which differ. The other thing is I believe the harness is different (someone confirm if this is true) If that's the case it would be a real pain in the @ss. You would have to splice every wire to the 96 harness.

All that is why I burnt out on trying to figure it out. I think it's possible, but probably won't be easy, especially if you don't want a check engine light.

Or stand alone engine management, not worth it on a Maxima IMHO.

Good points
I would try to do some work at it but I know little about car electronics.

Any one know y no one makes an ecu for us?

I think it's because the code hasen't been cracked for our ECU's.

Well you could always go stand alone and type all that in a computer and be done with it.
