Hopefully, in two weeks, I will be the proud owner of a 2001 20th Anniversary Edition Maxima (5-speed).
I was wondering if some of the experienced Maxima owners could give me some input as to the best way to "break in" the car.

Also, I would like to hear opinions on whether or not to take an extended warranty on the maxima.

I enjoy the site.

Look forward to hearing from someone.

Thanks.

I didn't get the extended warranty because 99% of the time it is 100% profit for the dealer/store/etc (this way with all extended warrantys). Also I didn't plan to have the car for longer than 3-5 years.

As far as break in I've heard... keep in under 5k rpms for the first 1000 miles and try to not drive for long periods at a constant RPM.

It is really hard to tell when improper break-in proceedure has caused problems because the problems don't show up until much later. Best solution is to follow the owner's manual/conventional wisdom - don't use full throttle for a while, don't use a lot of revs for a while, don't keep a constant speed for a while. Gradually increase all until the engine is well broken in - 1k mi or so. One old trick, not in the owners manual, is to accelerate the ring seating by alternately accelerating fairly hard and then completely closing the throttle.

break in input and extended warranty

Hey,

Thanks for the info. The dealer hasn't tried to hit me up with an extended warrantly yet, but, I can see it coming.

I happened to get a very good deal because the dealer made a mistake with regard my original order. I ended up with more options than I originally wanted, but I've wanted this car for a long time.

I do plan on keeping this car for quite a while, but I'm stil not convinced that the extended warranty would be worth it.

Anyway, thanks again for the info.

Very cool site!

Do a search...

The break in period topic came up once before. It'll be in the manual when you pickup the car. Gelfand, you are right when you say that the break in period is the first 1000 miles, but the manual will explain more of the details. Also, the search should turn up more info too. As for the extended warranty, my dealer will refund the price of my extended warranty if I don't use it by the time the warranty is up. I think it's worth it though, cause what IF something major does happen to your car. Better safe than sorry.
