Anyone boosted with a high knock count?
Anyone boosted with a high knock count?
To summarize my misery and the latest details on why I'm asking, go to : http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....hreadid=233088
I just want someone to tell me not to worry about doing a compression/leakdown test on my motor.. I didn't boost more than once or twice and haven't gone to max pressure yet.. I'm pretty sure the knock sensor is gone due to the AFC's readout sticking to no lower than 160.
I think my car is trying to punish me for removing the tranny..

I'm NA, and in the heat right now (99 degree days) I'm getting considerably higher knock than 160. Yesterday on the highway in 5th gear at 2800rpm I was getting a 322 raw reading on my knock sensor. I'm logging my knock everyday now in the morning, afternoon, and night.
Time of Day M, A, E
Idle (first start) knock
Driving knock
WOT knock
Idle (before shutoff) knock
If a few others keep a log of raw knocks maybe we'll get somewhere and/or see if the knock function really doesn't work for OBD II cars. So far my knock readings seem to be consistant everyday based on my throttle %, rpm, and temperature.

Jer,
I got the same issue, I think its normal. When I set the knock levels on the SAFCII at normal operating temperature and then a day like today where it gets near 90*F, at idle my knock shows 40 when normally it would show zero since it was calibrated. If I calibrate it on that hot day, then on a normal with at operating temp, the knock count will be off again cause it way lower than normal.
I just gave up on it.

Are you guys talking about raw knock counts under the Knock set menu or the knock number on the Monitor menu. The Raw knock counts are MUCH higher than the monitor numbers will ever be.
Just looking for clarification. I'll keep sampling data over the next few days and on the dyno tomorrow and see what I can come up with.

I was specifically talking about the monitor numbers, once you set the RAW numbers the monitor should show the knocks at 0. If anything anymore, that gives you the idea that the engine is knocking and you should back off.

Okay small update.. at the very last minute before leaving work it started to rain... and my car stalled three times when I tried to move it closer to the building.. then I couldn't get it to start at all.
I left it in the lot for 10 minutes, tried again, started it up. Felt like MAF to me...
Drove 40 mins to speedemn's place, plugged in his scan tool - p0105. Also my load is stuck at 100% even when I'm not moving and out of gear (is that normal?). If I mash the pedal and watch the throttle % on the AFC it slowly drops from hi 90-percentile to hi 80's as the vehicle speed increases. I'll adjust the TPS tomorrow.
Anybody got ideas about the load being stuck at 100%? He told me he hadn't seen it on anyone's car before.. the p0105 I thought was the MAF - it's the absolute pressure sensor. Gotta read up on that tomorrow.

Since we don't have an english manual we don't really know how/when to set the knock numbers, but I imagine it's during the day at WOT. The real question is what rpms are we supposed to be at.

Hey Jer....sorry to hear your problems.
I wish I could help but I am not too familiar with S-AFC.
I am just wondering....does the knock count necerssary mean knock/pinging is detected? or it just mean that the knock sensor just sent out a signal?

Once you set the raw knock number that is "normal" the monitor function tells you how much you're above the baseline numbers. I've read it's in percent, but I don't totally believe that. Right now my baseline is set around ~65 at 1350rpms and ~130 at 3650. When I was at 323 I was seeing the number 25-35 (I don't remember exactly) on the monitor. Unless the knock monitor extrapolates the data and then shows you your % difference above "normal" then the data isn't a straight percentage.
I'm still learning, but I'm logging everything for good measure.

Also here's a neat trick; when you're on one of the monitors hold down and it will take you to the fuel adjustment maps. I'll be using this to save time going through menus tomorrow on the dyno.

It's all good : I gotta figure out my absolute press. sensor now
Time for a new one I think.. but at least it doesn't affect performance/the car's driveability.
The knock count is just raw sensor info : I'm pretty sure it's along the lines of how many degrees of knock you're seeing... I just wonder what it tops out at.
Funny thing is, my AFC finally "learned" the 1300rpm knock count and set it to 45. It happened when I started the car and rpms sat around there lol. Now if I could only set the high end..meh, must fix car first
