Pictures of my Oil cooler/Mocal/Aeroquip fittings, etc.

probably not a hot topic here since everyboy just gets a Stillen or Permacool one....but just for ppl who's interested in putting togther an oil cooler themsevles, this might help. Do people here use oil cooler? I guess not too many except the boosted crowd.

clicky.....
http://www.cardomain.com/member_page...=239608&page=8

it took me a month to gather all the parts, 2 test fits, and about 6 hours to isntall it. I started with a straight hose fitting from the mocal and turned out there wasnt enough space.

some random notes....
-it is easier to install the mocal with a deep hex socket. I forgot the size, but it is not in metric for sure.

-need at least two adjustable wrench. You will scrach the pretty aeroquip fittings for sure. or you can get the aeroquip wrench. but that's 200 dollars a set!

-use teflon tape on all threads! skip 2 - 3 threads from the top and wrap it clockwise.

-dont forget to apply some oil to the rubber gasket on the mocal.

-This oil cooler only holds 200ml of oil. plus the capacity of the hose...it probably holds 300ml max.

-You will need a total of 9 ft (exit and return) of hose to route the cooler to the driver side.

-can't tell any change on performance. but my blower is cooler now.

nice job... it gets expensive but i think you have a better product than the stillen kit.

one comment though:
the hose is not seated correctly on the aeroquip fittings.. it should be flush against the stop.. also be careful about overtightening those kind of hose clamps on the socketless hose.

thx~

sharp eyes~ yup....I've tried everything to push that sucker all the way in. It is impossible....I put the fitting in the freezer, heat up the hose, lubricate the fitting, etc. but it just wont go all the way in! Ideally, it doesnt even need a hose clamp but I finally gave up on it.

I assume that I shouldnt overtightening the hoseclamp because it will crush the fittings?

Danny : can you take some pictures of the stillen kit once you received it? I want to see how stillen route their oil line. thx in advance.

Donkey man: I agree with you. Stillen does carry some fine products. I didnt buy a stillen kit is because it doesnt have a thermostat.

Great documentation! I need to get off my butt and do mine.

One word of advice: It's better to use teflon paste on oil fittings. You fer shur don't want a bit of teflon tape to break off and get inside your oil galleries. Sounds like you were careful using it, though, so you should be okay.

I had problems with this with my Nitrous kit. The previous owner of the kit used tape, and some came off. Thankfully NOS kits have an in-line filter before the solenoids. The tape plugged that filter and prevented nitrous from flowing.

What kind of change in temps are you seeing? Were you seeing over 180*F that much? I know we've discussed this, but it takes a LOT of driving for me to get even close to 180.

Very nice. When you said Mocal, I thought you bought their hydraulic pump! Where did you get the hose from?

lots of lube and a bench vise.. i used a small circular motion to help sit it down.. lots of sweat and cursing. clamps - more to prevent ripping the hose

Stephen : I had my teflon paste but it was gone. I had to use teflon tape and I was very careful on wrapping them. thx for the advice.

ejj: I dont have a oil temp gauge. but it is hotter than my tranny cooler than. my tranny temp is around 150 - 160F.

Jeff: thx! I got my blue hoses at a local auto store. They have it in black or blue. I initially want to get a black hose for exit and blue for return. but the black hose was out of stock.

Confused : guess I was not as patient as you were. I gave up after couple try. I spent 5 minutes on it....drain all my energy and get a little break, then went back to work on it. I know if I kept doing this, I will pop a vein in my brain.

Hi Jer!

BS, this is interesting to me. I may be PMing you because I may be removing my oil cooler and going with SS lines and I am going to mount the oil cooler lower below the radiator somewhere

I think ejj started a thread in SC/TC forum about how to install a hose fitting to a metal braided line. hope that will help.

isnt that just the tranny cooler itself? dont you still need sandwichplate adapter and fittings?

Mine came with everything I needed for the install, except enough hose. I bought more hose at the auto parts store and had the job done in 30 minutes...

Yeah, I alleviated that issue by installing an oil temp gauge.

That's doesn't help the oil get up to temperature faster, which is the point of the thermostat.
