clean engine bay
cover up the battery/intake area (although i removed both and cleaned) soak down valve cover and intake manifold and any other major metal/machined parts with carb cleaner for about 10-15 mins. Soak down rubber hoses and plastic and such with simple green or fantastik or whatever. Then i power washed it all off. Its ok if water gets to the electircal harnesses just as long as you dont like completely drench it with water and spray the harnesses dead on. I sprayed it full force on the manifold and valve cover but just misted over eveything else. Try to let it dry off before running the car, the belts may squeak a little when wet but it goes away. I treated the rubber/plastic with some vinyl protectant/detail spray. No problems and this is the 2nd time i did it. I was most impressed with the [noob]air rail thingy[/noob] which was originally rusty and discolored, but after some sanding and metal polish, its almost chrome-like now
Im not done though; since the whole intake manifold needs to be swapped for the 5sp i didnt put alot of effort into it. And the airbox too, i plan on taking care of that soon
along with a newer battery and tidying up the cables running from the positive terminal of the battery. Last but not least, nearly every metal piece/bracket/bolt/clamp (like the "air rail") that i can get my hands on will be sanded down and polished to look sorta like a high polished aluminum. Look at the metal part of the AC hose in front of the valve cover...sorta like that, on the verge of chrome but not completely chrome. I like the aluminum-silver "machined" look, it goes with black cars very nicely. I may also sand down my calipers and polish them to a bright aluminum-like finish.

do you have ABS brakes? your coolant reservoir is on the opposite side as mine, and there's some shiny thing over there instead that looks like a hookah. forgive me if this is something really obvious that i shouldn't have to ask about.
