WTH my car is so slow...

i have a 97se with stillen intake, frankencar midpipe, and budget y-pipe and i took my car to route66 raceway in joliet il. i was hoping for at least a 15.7, but my best run of the night was a 15.96@87.4

oh yea and i wasn't planning on goin to the tracks and i had some 87 octane gas in the tank. would that make a huge diff? my 60' was a high 2.3. i think my car is seriously lackin in the top end. any ideas?

Put real gas in your car and stop saving $20 a year on p1ss water. You are likely losing a TON of hp because you are running on crappy gas that is causing your car to knock, the KS is pulling back timing thus your car is slow. You aren't doing your car any favors by putting in gas lower than is recommended by your owners' manual.

You are obviously losing power somewhere, your car is probably making 40 less hp than it should be given your mods. You should be trapping 94-95 with those mods, and looking at 14.7s on average, not 15.9s.

I'd say you could run a 15.4 at about 90 mph with good track conditions.

My friend with your mods traps 92 at RT 66 in a 99 SEL Auto. Put some good gas in it and go back and see what happens.

low 15s is about right, high 14s if you can get it off the line well.

RT66 is an average track. It hooks up well but trap speeds are neither high nor low there.

I have a pretty similar set up with a five speed. Although I run quite a bit quicker mid to high 14's consistently, it does sound like you are lacking on top end. Try this.

Clean out the throttle body. I know it sounds stupid, but it will help throttle response. Change your fuel filter, and upgrade your gas. Try those things, and then run it again. See how it does.

brake torque to around 1000 rpms, then ease into the throttle. practice a few times to see how much gas you can give it before the tires break loose. I can only do about 60% throttle on the track, 80% on the pavement before i break loose from a standstill.

went back to the tracks last night...

i started this thread about a month ago after i went to route66 raceway in joliet. i was running 15.99's there all day with a first run of a 16.0xx. yesterday i went to great lakes dragaway in union grove WI, and my first run i ran a 15.66. i was really surprised at this...because i wasn't expecting to go the tracks and i had 87 octane in there again (putting flame suit on). my 60' for that run was a 2.35, and i used the 1-2-d shift method each time. i know power drops off significantly after like 5500 rpm, but i always get a 1 mph higher trap speed and my e.t is slightly better when i do this. maybe because it shifts into a stronger part of the rev band in the next gear? whatever...anything to help our tall *** gearing in the auto's. oh and i saw another org member up there with a black 5spd se, he was running some low 16's but i think it was his first time at the track and couldn't nail his launch.

solid

This is funny solid. I have enjoyed the thread but continue to laugh and wonder why you SWEAR BY 87 octane. LOL ! It would be even funnier if that was your member name.

I would'nt put that mess in my MAXIMA if you were paying for it ! This past Friday I was out doing some work and had a BP credit card and anyways I ended up in a situation where I had to get gas at this certain Gulf Station. I swiped the card and started filling up.

Then all of a sudden I noticed that this place was selling 92 octane. I griped and complained and thought how cheap and this is an outrage an all that. LOL

And to think you enjoy your 87

I tell ya. I have spent more money on this Maxima of mine this year than any sensible person should. Another grand or so and Im probably approaching the blue book. But here is the deal.

I have started going to the track too. And my goal is to get faster and faster .. With this mod and that ...but BLOODY HAIL MAN !

Running 87 octane is a terrible thing to do especially when you are shooting for high 14's, and with something as simple as gas selection its a no brainer. Also, I dont know much about the engine but im not sure its good fo the car to be running that kind of gas ??

Anyways Solid87 im just having some fun and trying to get my point across... don't you want to hit the dragway and be as competitive as possible. I would rather do everything to hang with cars that faster but close to my car. Instead of some guy in a 03 Mustang GT saying HA! I blew that ricer away ...they might be saying dang !! that maxima was pretty quick running a 14.9 !!

then of course some people may take it to the track for fun and could care less. im trying to work my way to mid 14's .. this way over in mustang land I might pull off a few wins and laugh my tail off in the process .

another thing about that 92 i put in the car, i could have sworn i heard some knocking ???? im wondering if it was even 92 ?
there was a post much like this one over at the Lawnmower forums. Some dude had be complaining about the higher gas prices and decided to fill up with water.

then rants and raves about poor performance, the mower is not cutting any grass and now refuses to crank !

i never said i swear by 87 octane. my parents had the car for 4 yrs before i did and always used regular gas. they had no idea that the car needed premium. anyway now that its my car i wish i could afford to pay 2.12 a gallon for premium in chicago where gas is insanely expensive, but i'm just a poor college student tryin to get by. i'd rather save those 4 bucks a tank and get a big mac meal. oh and your maxima must be a really special one if mine has been running for 6 yrs on 87 octane without a problem and yours starts knocking after one fillup of 92 and not 93.

So let me get this straight.

1) You PAY to go to the track and race.
2) You save a whole 20-30 cents per gallon by putting 87 in.
3) Because of #2, your engine is running 20-30hp below where it should be.
4) Because of #3, you run crappy times at the track.
5) You start this thread complaining about crappy times.

And now you make this lame excuse about gas being expensive and being a poor college student and you would rather have a big mac. So then why are you wasting your money by going to the track when you don't even put the right gas in it?

Right.

1) i did not pay, my friend wanted me to go to the tracks and he paid for me. but whats it to you anyway?
2) i drive about 500 miles a week, and yes 20 cents a gallon makes a difference in the long run.
3) 15.6 seems like a normal time for an auto max.
5) I don't understand why people who share the same hobbies and interests are so quick to roll their eyes instead of lending a helping hand.

its not like i was at the tracks running diesel so chill.

IMO it is pointless to go to the track if you are not going to cough up the extra 20+ cents for 93.

and it is extremely pointless to put ANY mods on your car if you are not going to to something as simple as this to take full advantage of your mods!!

Timing plays a HUGE role in engine tuning. It is what ties everything in to run correctly and effectively.

By the way about saving money...

I actually did some math and figured out that I spent MORE money when i used the cheap stuff because you have got to be in the throttle twice as much to get the same power

just some experience

hope i could help

BTW advice on the right kind of fuel IS a helping hand.
Sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between when people are doing things FOR you and not TO you.
