Ummm, what do you mean?

Also, apologese for multiple postings; I kept getting error page not found when posting so I kept trying again and again. Any idea on how to delete the other ones?

thanks,

human

i mean that i clicked on this topic "tranny died?" and it came up blank. there was nothing here. only a reply window. nobody had typed anything to start the thread. so i just typed the above thing.

my tranny did die like 2 years ago, to satisfy the topic title (which is not mine, mind you).

after the rebuild, i began to have them change the gear oil in it like every 6 months to remove any metal shavings in there that may have accumulated due to bad shifting. apparently, those shavings really f@@@$@ck up the tranny. and people overlook the need to change that oil in there.

i have lately experienced the "submit reply" funtion not working, too. the org is running slowly right now.

Answer

Well, what seemed to happen was that all the text I entered didn't show up hence the empty post. Anyway, this was my original question:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Stock '94 Maxima SE, automatic, 84k miles. Been pretty good so far.

Today, I tried to start from a taffic signal; car lurched forward and then stopped. Now it won't move in any of the gears; with the engine running putting it in park is difficult and makes a loud sound. All the other gears also make this grinding sound and in drive the engine and speedometer rev up without me touching the accelerator. With the engine off, the car won't stay in park, it rolls with the slope. Tried again a few hours later when showing to mechanically inclined friend. Few hours after that there seemeds to be a large amount of clear light oil leaking under car.

My question is has the transmission died? Have I broken an axle? Any ideas? And any idea on what this will cost me?

As an fyi, I had the front pipe and the driver side CV boot changed (it was torn) last week. Could that work have caused this problem (hurried, newbie mechanic?)

thanks in advance,
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It turns out that the driver side axle, which had the CV boot changed, popped out of the tranny and the grinding sound was the end of the teeth on the axle rubbing against the correspondant teeth inside the tranny. The mechanic who had done the original work, removed the axle, checked that the teeth looked fine and reinserted it again. Hopefully it will stay this time. No idea why it popped out in the first place. Luckly no harm done expect for some wasted time and worry.

Anyone else encountered this and did it happen repeatedly? Any gotcha's to watch for?

thanks,

human

anytime a drive axle "pops out" it is a result of one of two things; either the mechanic didn't "pop" it in properly, or the ring that locks the axle in the tranny is not holding. either way, i'd have it rechecked my your mechanic.

good luck!
