Exhaust size questions

Warpspeed is marketing a complete 3" exhaust system for the Maxima. This would be great for when you're boosting, but what about normal around town driving? Would there be a noticeable drop in low and mid range power?

Also, at what boost level do you need a 3" exhaust over a 2.5" exhaust?

You're the ME so you know better than I, but I do know sx7r used to run a 3" ypipe into a 3" exhaust. I asked him if he felt any power loss in the city, and he said he really didn't notice it. The exhaust definitely helped him when he was running nitrous, so I guess it's your call.

whats up man, i got what your talking about complete 3'' exhaust system from warpspeed it cost me about 650.00 and was shipped the next day. ok if you boosted i don't think you should feel any loss in power i haven't,over all its a good exhaust just very very loud even with the resinator i traded my full 2.5'' for this exhaust system when i installed my sc. i'am not sure what it would do to n/a maximas if you get one you might want to look in to getting a diffent muffler as the magnaflow is loud- compared to my 2.5 with test pipe and no resinator its twice or mabe three times as loud. i was also told by some org. members that you shouldn't use a 3'' unless your boosting 10 or more psi to get a performance gain(i'am not sure about that i've got 9psi an don't see any lag at any rpm hope this helps

Thanks, Matthew. I know in theory that the smaller diameter piping helps keep exhaust gases flowing, and that larger diameter exhaust can hurt extraction of the gases from the combustion chamber. But I have no experience in how much loss in low end power you can actually feel. I don't want to compromise the driveability of my car too much in my quest for top end thrill seeking. I'm thinking that maybe a 2.5" exhaust is probably the best compromise for me, but if sx7r and others say they don't really notice any low end loss, then I can be persuaded to go with a 3" exhuast that will allow for higher boost levels in the future.

Re: Re: Re: Exhaust size questions

yeah driving around town with his current 3 inch setup(sx7r) it feels just like any other max with an exhaust... no power drop really....

That's one of my upcoming projects - 3 inch y, 3 inch test pipe and a custom 3 inch catback.... It makes sense that you would see gains at any kind of boost whether it's @ 6 or 15.... but obviously seeing more @ 15 psi... btw, greddy evo sounds damn good and quiet even with its 3.6 inch inlet

Way back when I did my exhaust I went with a 2.25" catback (a big mistake now), and I'm absolutely sure I'm losing power because I'm choking the exhaust even though I'm only running a 70 shot. I mentioned Thomas specifically because nitrous is a great way to learn about how FI mods affect NA performance. On the bottle he got those great numbers, and if he didn't feel any loss NA then I'm sure you won't notice any loss with a SC.

Overall not feeling a loss is relative because sometimes my butt dyno can't discern power differences very easily even when they're 10+hp. I didn't really notice my colder plugs, but the dyno showed I'm losing power. I was also surprised at how little of a difference I noticed with my 50 shot
