Is there any hope for my rims?

My car has spent its entire life minus the past six minths in New York and my rims have damage from salt, ect... Is there a way to clean these up by light sanding or another method or are these just shot?

you can clean them up, but it requires a complete refinish of the face of the wheel. a shop will charge anywhere from $25 to $100 per wheel for it.

Get new wheels. My SE has those and I HATE them! For such a wonderful car, Nissan could not have picked an uglier OEM style. Heck, the stock GXE rims look better than these.

I could not agree more. And yes, the GXE rims were better. I've never really liked the 3rd gen SE rims but at least for now I don't spend the money to get new ones. I'd rather spend my money on a new knock sensor to get rid of the minor heat soak problem I have .
I always loved the 4th gen SE rims and would consider those in the future assuming they don't cost and arm and a leg. These will fit on my '93 SE, right?

yeah. they will fit.
why dont you just repaint them. my bros girlfriend painted her rims with some flat silver wheel spraypaint from pep boys and they look like new again. cheap way to make em look good.

All Maxima rims after 3rd gen will fit. I fully understand weighing the rim to real-maintenance factor. But dyam. I just may have to bite the bullet on this one.

I sanded and repainted my SE rims white with Duplicolor wheel paint. For $20, it came out great IMO.

Now, that is what I am talking about. I need to find some cheap rims similar to those.

My SE wheels are starting to bubble and blister too. Someday I'll have to pull the rims and repaint them... I was quoted $150 Cdn to refinish them!

Does anyone have any paint colour or brand recommendations to match the colour of them? Something like Duplicolor High Performance Wheel Paint in silver maybe? I'd just like to be able to repaint the center face of the wheels and have it match "okay" with the rest of it.

it will be hard just to match the center face because the rims are more of a stainless steel and any paint is going to look flat and wont have the shine. you can easily mask off the wheels and repaint the whole rim. i did it before i got my new rims. it looked pretty good. as far as a good brand, i used krylon anti-rust spray paint. very good paint. lasts forever! the wheels are sitting on the side of my house and the paint still hasnt started to look bad!

When I get my new rims, I am going to have two of these ugly ducklings for sale (keeping two for full size spare).

your best bet for a nice clean 5 spoke that is affordable are the 2k (and other years) 5 spoke 16" wheels. They look nice and can be had for a reasonable price.

as far as the factory wheels go...how in the world do some say the flower wheels (gxe=daisy) look better than the SE wheels...yeah I know its all opinion. I admit I dont really like either but of the 2 I like the SE wheels much better.

Ooops! I just meant the center of the wheel near the centercap, not the cap itself. I don't really want to paint the spokes because prepping them properly will be tedious, so I'm hoping I can get away with just painting the area between the spokes and the center...

These aren't cheap. For an inexpensive alternative, I would try to find some Enkei RS-5's, or some Konig Villains or Monsoons. Those were the wheels I was looking at before I found the SSR's.

By the way, here is what my stock painted wheels looked like:

Pretty good job on your old, OEM wheels. All except for that big azz, balancing weight. Hehehehehe

Well they arent my wheels they are Mizeree_X's

They are SSR wheels. Do a search on google to find them. I believe he got them used for a good price but new they are pretty steep. They are good quality light wheels.

I bought the rims and tires as a combo for $1000. The rims are 18x8 SSR Integral A2's w/ a +45 offset (I have spacers in the rear). The tires are Pirelli P7000 high performance all season tires. Yes, they are loud but I don't mind that much. When it comes time to replace them I'll probly get Kumhos or Nittos, as the Pirelli's are pretty hard tires. New, this combo would have cost over $2000. I had to jump on the deal, and I am glad I did. These and the MAS Presidents are the best looking rims for this car IMHO.

I have a '92 GXE, and my rims were messed up from all of the winter Toronto road salt. I refinished them using some paint stripper, A to Z wheel cleaner and 320 wet sand paper, clear acrylic spray.
Here's the drill:
1. apply paint stripper to remove factory clear coat.
2. when stripper is finished bubbling, scrape off.
3. rinse off, then use A to Z cleaner, rinse agian (well)
4. use sandpaper with soap/water mixture; sand in a circular motion to match the factory aluminum mill finish. You may need coarser paper for the badly pitted areas first (120-220 grit).
5. mask off tire, apply clear acrylic coat.

They turned out well and didn't take too long, once you get into a rhythm, not quite a proffessional job, but a thousand times better than the mess that I began with, and it cost me about $20 in material. I'll try to take some pictures tonight.
