clutch fluid and CV joint help!!

I have two questions that I didn't get a definite answer to while I was searching. And I'm pretty sure there are quite a few of you out there that want to know the same. So here they are......

How do you change the clutch fluid in a 4th gen 5spd? I checked my fluid today and it's very black. I have 117k miles and I dunno if the fluid was ever changed since the day it's bought (i'm the 3rd owner). I really wanna do this job myself but I don't have directions (even my haynes manual doesn't list how to do it!).

My CV boots are ripped on both sides. They haven't made any clicking noises but i'm sure the boots have been ripped for months. I want to take it to a shop, but what exactly do I ask them to perform? To replace the whole CV axle or just the outer CV joint? Also what is a good price range for the procedures?

thanks!!

i haven't actually done it myself but i know that i have seen write ups on it. try this site it has lots of very helpful and detailed info in it.

i'm not sure if you can just replace the boots or not but i usually pay about 100 bucks a side for cv joint rebuild.

thanks!!

Get a Haynes manual...it'll tell you everything you need to know! As for what to tell the mechanic: Tell him to replace the drive axles.

Mechanics usually tell you that they can be rebuild, but it will be far more expensive. An axle only costs like $65, and it should be no more than an hour labor. Rebuilding should cost ~$90, and it takes a lot more time (more labor, more cost to you).

If you're somewhat handy, replace the axle yourself. The Haynes manual will tell you how.

Thanks for all the replies fellas. Hey sryth, the Haynes manual doesn't list how to replace clutch fluid. It only list stuff like remove slave cylinder, master cylinder, height adjustment etc...So how do you exactly replace the clutch fluid? It's very black and I dont think its a good sign since brand new fluid is suppose to be reddish

Hook a tube up to the bleeder valve (on the slave cylinder), put the other end into a 2 liter bottle (or something similar) and pump pump pump! That'll get the old stuff out...put the new stuff in...then follow these instructions to bleed the system (remove all air).

Just remember, you're gonna need a lot more than what you took out, as bleeding involves pumping fluid out of the valve.
