Your Opinion Wanted On These Components

1 .In the case of turbos for the VQ30 Maxima, which turbos do you guys like? Here are two that interest me.

GT30
T3/T4

2. In the case of BOV's for the VQ30 Max, which do you prefer and why?

Tial
HKS SS
Greddy

3. What engine management setups are you guys running? How do you like it? Would you have gotten the same one again?

Haltech
Apex'i
Vortech

4. Are you guys running boost controllers with as well as fmu's? If so, which ones?

5. What intercoolers are you guys running? How do you like it? Would you have gotten the same one again?

Here is my setup, that I had fabbed up at PFI. I chose these components because I researched so much about them.

Turbo: T4 Ball Bearing Super Series, .63 compressor .81 AR (GREAT turbo)
Wastegate: Tial 38mm with a 7-9lb spring (standard here)
BOV: HKS SSQ BOV (loud with a hiss)
Fuel: Vortech FMU with the 4:1, 6:1, 8:1, 10:1, and 12:1 disks (standard)
Fuel: Apex'i S-AFC (Very tunable)
Intercooler: Welded Spearco intercooler (Great cooler because of name)
Boost Controller: Blitz SBC-ID Version III with the Powermeter (awesome)
Timer: Blitz DTT-DC Turbo Timer (monitors boost plus warning/peak)

I chose this setup because it seemed(s) ideal for me and what I want out of it.

Turbo: T4 Ball Bearing Super Series, .63 compressor .81 AR (GREAT turbo)

How is the lag on this turbo? I was interested in this turbo as well, but I was told that the GT30 is so much better, it's worth the extra cost. If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for this turbo?

Wastegate: Tial 38mm with a 7-9lb spring (standard here)
BOV: HKS SSQ BOV (loud with a hiss)

How much did these two components cost each?

Fuel: Vortech FMU with the 4:1, 6:1, 8:1, 10:1, and 12:1 disks (standard)
Fuel: Apex'i S-AFC (Very tunable)

Why is it necessary to run both of these?

Intercooler: Welded Spearco intercooler (Great cooler because of name)

What do you know about other intercoolers? Again, if you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for this?

Boost Controller: Blitz SBC-ID Version III with the Powermeter (awesome)
Timer: Blitz DTT-DC Turbo Timer (monitors boost plus warning/peak)

How much did these two components cost each?

You need to run an FMU to add additional fuel from the boost. The SAFC is there to fine tune the A/F ratio to maximize your HP. The FMU cant fine tune, its a flat out change across the board for the fuel trim.

I can tell you the Blitz boost controller and Powermeter together run about 675. The turbo timer is about 100-125. If you dont want the boost monitor turbo timer, get the FATT one that Blitz makes and its like $80.

Intercooler, Spearco is the top brand of intercoolers, but there are plenty of others that are good as well. The key is to look for the CFM you plan on pushing from the turbo and make sure the Intercooler can handle that, and then look at psi loss from the intercooler. Most of them have anywhere from 1/2-2psi loss. Obviously the less psi loss the better.

The HKS SSQV BOV costs about $150. The Tial wastegate is about $200-250. Id get the Turbonetics Deltagate since you can change the spring on there. The tial cant be changed, you have to order it with the spring you want in there. But if you plan on going boost controller, you dont need to change the springs.

There is no lag when shifting. I see full boost at 3600 in first, and 3500 in 2nd-5th. When I shift from one gear to the other, I am RIGHT in the full boost range of the turbo, so that is great. I think the turbo is around $1100, but I am unsure since it was included with the turbo kit as a whole, and I did not get an itemized receipt.

The wastegate is around $230 on eBay, which is VERY good. And the BOV is around $150, plus an additional 20-30 dollars for the flange.

Fuel: Vortech FMU with the 4:1, 6:1, 8:1, 10:1, and 12:1 disks (standard)
Fuel: Apex'i S-AFC (Very tunable)

You only NEED to run the FMU, the S-AFC just fine tunes the air/fuel ratios at RPM increments.

Intercooler: Welded Spearco intercooler (Great cooler because of name)

I do know quite a bit about the intercoolers. You will need to match up the CFMs of the intercooler with the amount of boost you will be handling. Too high of a CFM on the intercooler and you will loose quite a bit of boost and too low of a CFM will choke out the turbo. The two great names in intercoolers are Spearco and PWR. They can be purchased at most online Turbo stores and on eBay. They tend to be anywhere from $400-$1500.....

Boost Controller: Blitz SBC-ID Version III with the Powermeter (awesome)
Timer: Blitz DTT-DC Turbo Timer (monitors boost plus warning/peak)

How much did these two components cost each?
The boost controller and powermeter can be bought from www.twinturbo.net for $649 together on their deal they have going in the Classifieds section. I bought them separately, and they ended up being about $700.00. The timer is the "higher" end one from Blitz that also monitors boost, and has a peak and warning setting. I only got this so I have three things monitoring boost (boost controller, timer, and boost gauge). The regular FATT timer from Blitz will do just fine and cost you around $80.00 from eBay. Mine I bought used on eBay for $80.00, but it was in PERFECT condition without a flaw. It usually goes for $120.00 on eBay.....

Turbo? Who me? NO!!! I don't like boost. It's not like I was addicted to it or anything on my old Volvo 850 Turbo. It's not like I was thinking about turbocharging the Maxima from day 1.

BUT, just for ***** and giggles, if I were to run a turbo kit. It would probably be something like the following.

T3/T4 hybrid
Tial 38mm
BOV (to be honest, don't really care which company)
Intercooler (again, don't really care which company)
Custom made electronics for controlling everything

Just have to find places that sell all this stuff as cheap as possible. Not like I'm ever going to buy any of it

(after the AE kit, HID's, tint, new tires, and monetary compensation to the .org that I've been putting off for about 2.5 years)

Are you serious about that Volvo FMIC? Have any pics of it? I'm definetly interested.

I'm trying to source my turbo from this guy my buddy knows up in Waterloo. Dave/black5spdmax has a buddy that may be able to hook me up with cheap turbos and intercoolers as well. I have a lot of crap to source.

Hey, r u on icq/msn messenger? With you being boosted I'm sure to have ideas to bounce of your brain.

The GT30 will spin MORE than enough. Way more than even most built up VQ's can handle. The GT35 is even bigger, and thus not necessary. I'd rather have the slightly smaller GT30, which to me is a perfect turbo for the VQ, with less lag, and more than enough up top, then go with the GT35, get more lag, and not be able to use its top end.
