Bypass valve negate CAI gains?

I've read it does, i've read it dosent. Some people say the test
that shows that the bypass valve negates any gains from the CAI are not accurate b/c the tubing was like 4ft long. I think it was done on an Acura NSX?

Well im curious b/c i think i need to order one b/c a buddy of mine w/ one of those hatchback focus's and a CAI w/ no bypass valve just hydrolocked his engine.

SO: Does the bypass valve negate any gains you would have recieved from the CAI (in other words, is it not even worth gettin a CAI if you are gonna put a bypass valve on it?)

No i dont believe so. but ive heard of other people hydrolocking their engine. Last week i read a post from a guy that said his friend hydrolocked his celica's engine.

Im pretty sure it only takes a very small amount of water to do it

Why worry about it unless you're slammed to the ground and typically drive thru 8+" puddles of water. If it bothers you that much then just run a hybrid intake. The gains are the same between the two.

I guess id feel safe if everyone else on here w/ CAI's dont have a bypass valve. I just dont know if anyone else is using them. As far as being slammed to the ground...im lower than my neighbors focus who hydrolocked his engine

Actually Russ hydrolocked one of his 4th gens with a CAI driving thru a flooded out area.

Take a measurement of where your filter sits and determine how much water you can drive thru. Personally, driving thru water any deeper deeper than just 3" is completely stupid. Way too make things can happen.

Re: Bypass valve negate CAI gains?

I've got a cai and no bypass valve, and yeah, I have to admit, I get a little nervous when we get torrential rains here. I don't usually drive in flood conditions, but if I had to, I'd just disconnect the upper end of the cai and let the engine breathe unfiltered air for a while.

So as not to risk hydrolocking the engine when it floods. I thought that was clear from context. For instance, if I got caught at work and had to drive home with water pooling up on the highway and in low spots, I would much rather run the engine without the filter than risk a hydolock.

Besides, what's the problem? There's not going to be any dust in the air after a torrential downpour, and low flying birds and whatnot will be caught in the mafs screen.

this has been discussed since the days when PlaceRacing made the first CAI for the max. There is NO need whatsoever for a bypass valve on a maxima CAI, the filter element is high enough up in the fender to be protected from even mild flooding

Just have a spare cheap filter in the trunk... so when you see water just take off the cai pipe and put on that filter
