Too bad there is no "fix". If you shut off your engine with the a/c running moisture in the air will condense inside the ducts. These wet ducts are a breeding ground for bacteria of the type that produces the odor you noticed. Some cars have more of a problem with this than others. The best you can do is to make sure the ducting is dry before you park. Quit using a/c well before you shut down or run the heat for bit to avoid cold duct syndrome.

The dealership does have a special spray to kill the bacteria, I had it done to my max, and it killed the moldy smell. They turn the air on full blast (recirculation), and spray it into the defroster duct on top of the dash. Now I just make sure not to keep my AC on recirculation all the time, to let fresh air dry out the system. Smell hasn't come back yet.

Here's some other info I found on it:
Here's a can of the odor removing stuff:

Here's an article:
http://dodgeram.org/tech/repair/HVAC/AC_Odor.htm
To remove the moldy odor from the A/C, get a can of Lysol. With the truck running, turn on the HVAC control to high, outside air. Open the hood and spray the Lysol into the vent that brings in the outside air. It is located in the cowl area; you will know if you are getting it in the vent if you smell Lysol in the cab. (The smell of lysol will go away after a half hour or so.) The mold odor will be gone along with the lysol smell. When the moldy odor smell comes back, get more Lysol and use the whole can. I did this to my Lincoln, and it works real well. My Ram has no odor yet.

I've done the "can of Lysol in the intake" trick several times to my aging Protege. It really helps clean out the ventilation system. Hmm, or maybe I should say it kills all of the stinky bacteria growing in my ventilation system.

My dealership used a spray similar to the 1st link, windows were fine, just had to wipe the front window off a bit.

It will help a little also if you use fresh air (and not RECIRC) every now and then. On hot days you may never come out of recirc mode (on an auto a/c) and that tedns to make more smell for me then next time I get in the car.

A little b4 I get home, I switch off recirc and let it "dry out" a little and it seems to help. Maybe the dealer would spray some junk in there on your next oil change for free!

If you just set on Recirculate, turn on high, and spray into the defroster ducts on top of the dash, that should clean out you're system. At least that's what a Nissan Tech did to mine, and it has been fine for 3 months now.
