I think the 245 would give it a wider stance and more aggresive look.

 

245/40/18 ... closer to stock wheel diameter and are more aggressive. Plus, the bit of extra rubber protects the wheels

 

245/40r18 no question. Large variety of tires to choose from in that size, better width and traction, and the speedo will be off by much less...

 

you save some unsprung weight using 235/40 plus it's a tad cheaper.

 

You should be putting a 235/40/18 on your 18x8 wheel. Trying to put a 245 on 8" will be a bit too wide and your car will not handle as well as it should. THe cars response time will suffer. If you want to use a 245/40/18 you should have purchased an 18x8.5 or an 18x9" wheel. Don't do the 245 on an 8" wheel, it will make you look uninformed. If you don't believe me, ask the pros. This is the delema I am having. I know the 235 is preferable but I am worried about the diameter being to small.

I have used 245s on two sets of 8" wheels and yes the sidewall is a bit over the edge of the wheel but not to bad. A 235 would be the perfect width if only the diameter was a bit larger.confused:

 

You also have to consider if your car is lowered. I have the Eibach's installed and 245 hits in the back.

 

...All of the major tire manufacturers quote 8" width as an approved rim for 245/40r18... So it should be fine. The difference in ride quality should be almost unnoticable, but the speedo difference with 235/40 would be a lot more...

 

that has nothing too do with the series tire. Its the wheel offset, I am on Teins with 8" wide wheels and 245 tire with no rubbing.

 

245-40 look perfect on 8" wide wheels and within spec. Tire Rack specs 235-40 for 8.5" wide wheels also whats that tell you. Each tire has spec sheets that say what width wheel will work with the tire... by that not joe blow.

 

From what you are saying, it seems like you have to consider both the series and the offset.

 

...Matt is right. In fact, 235/40 needs a WIDER rim than 245/40, not a narrower one. The 245/40 is approved on 8" 235/40 needs 8.5"... The reason is the sidewall. The 245/40 has more sidewall so it can flex down to an 8" rim size and still get a tight seat. The 235/40 will be LESS stable at speed on an 8" rim than the 245/40 will be...

 

No unless you go higher than 255-40 the tire is not an issue. It has too do totally with the wheels offset. Higher than 43 and lower than 35 offset might cause issues. I'm a hell of a lot lower that eibachs drop and I run 245 series tires with no problem/rubbing/scraping at all. BTW my wheels are 18x8 with 35 offset.

I show a diameter difference of .2 inches between the two. The rim has an offset of 38mm. Is it just going to be preference what size tire to buy?

 

...Unfortunately .2 inches will make a big difference when calculatiing your miles on the odometer, especially over time, as well as the speed on your speedometer. Look at the poll results, go with the 245/40...

 

Actually, my GLE comes stock with a 215/55/16 tire. The 235/40/18 tire has the exact same outside diameter as a 215/55/16 which is 25.4".

I think I know why so many people use the 245, they have SEs and are starting with a 225/50/17 tire.

I feel at this point this issue has no correct answer. If you want to match the diameter of a stock 17" tire go 245. If you want to match diameter of a stock 16" tire go 235.

My preference of width on a 8" wheel would be 235, I like a flush sidewall.

So unless anyone can convince me otherwise, I am going against most of the .org members opinions and going 235.

 

The reason your going with 235 on a 8" wide wheel is too sit flush with the sidewall? Why do people think 245 doesn't sit flush? The reason too get 245 is for more wheel protection and a little wider patch touching the road. If your thinking 245 bulges around the rim it doesn't. Just my opinion and no it isn't biased b/c I have 245-40.

 

Being a Tire Rack dealer, I can tell you that a 245 will work perfect on an 8" wide wheel. I have 245/40s on my 03 SE with 18" Moda R6s. Also, with the proper offset wheel, the 245s will not rub even if the car is lowered. The 245s also match the factory tire diameters the closest. They also match the tire/wheel load rating. Also, my tires fit flush with the rim. 235s have that "rolled under" look.

 

I have 18 x7 rims and I'm running 245/40/18.
