What's the MSRP, and what options are on the car? Auto or manual? New and not a demo, mileage?

The car is in a different state, we're currently negotiating over the phone. Supposedly, MSRP is ~30K. Car is Automatic, NEW (not demo), probably a few dozen miles on it.

Sorry, don't know all the details on the options, but from a quick search on kbb, here's some info on the pkg. (feel free to let me know if I'm missing anything for those of you that have the Titanium Pkg.):

Titanium Pkg.:
Includes Leather Pkg.
Moonroof
Bose Stereo & 6 CD Changer In Dash
Front Side Impact Air Bag Restraint System
Dark Chrome Wheels
Door Sill Plates
Unique Floor Mats
Compass in Mirror.

Just for Comparison...

...I paid $26,500 back in September 02 for the same car (all but Navi). Remember that despite if it hasn't been driven, the new style is out and it is a year old already. I would low ball them and see how much they are willing to part with it for.

However, the 03 SEs are very hard to find in a 6 SP so you may fall victim to the market. Depending on how far away it is it might be worht going to look at it in person (you'll have to do it anyway). That way they will know you are serious, you can check out the car, and cry poverty at the same time tell them "I really want to drive this car off the lot today". That worked wonders during my negotiation. I was all "I would give you $40,000 if I could afford it but I just don't have the cash". Trust me, it is costing them money to keep the car on the lot and they want to sell it as bad as you want to buy it.

I agree with spta97. Back when I bought my 2000 SE at the end of the model year, end of Sept '00 (the 2001's were just coming out), the same dealer I bought from was offering $4000 off MSRP for any leftover 2000 on the lot. Obviously plus TT&L. That was without any negotiations.

Do you know the name of the dealer? Go to nissanusa.com and you can view the window sticker for this car. '03 SE (auto or 6sp) were going for MSRP minus $6000 when I bought mine back in May.

I assume that you know what you're getting into with maxima (hood shake, rotor warping, paint chips, power windows, MAF, Bose, variable performance, etc.). maxima is a $30,000 car on paper but can be surprising in terms of quality of components and engineering versus other cars in the $30-40,000 bracket.

$27,000? That seems really high. My pops just got a 2003 I35 for that same amount (no warranty). When you drive off the lot, that car's value will take a nose dive.

Personally, yes. Although if you really want it, get it because there are none left anywhere else you go. I wouldn't be shocked if there were less than 10 new 2003s left in the entire country. I had 5+ different dealers do nationwide searches for them and they came up with nothing.

Just tried Jay B.'s advice and looked up the car - MSRP was only $28,344.00 - I guess $26K (for just the car) wouldn't be worth it then...

Thanks for the quick replies!

dude dont offer more than 23K with wtty. The car does not worth 27K. You can probably get 2k4 for 27-28K by now.

I'ld have to give the G35 sedan some serious thought at 29,999 before picking up an 03 maxima for 27,000.

Offer 24,500. There is $2000 dealer cash for that vehicle. Not sure if it is still going on. That $2000 Nissan sends that dealership should be passed on to you in the price of the car. I work for a Nissan dealership by the way. Make an offer, be firm, and don't be afraid to get up and threaten to walk away. That is when they will make their bottom line offer.

- Nismo3Point5...or anyone else..

Sorry for the slight OT, but while we are talking car negotiation, Do you have any recommended web sites or advice on 'haggling' dealers? That is - what works, what doesn't, what you should do and not do. Thanks.

Go through the fleet department. Those guys are concerned with volume, not margin. I never deal with the guys up front. Do most of the negotiating via e-mail before you go in.

If the dealership has an internet sales department, see what the car is priced at on the internet. I know that at my dealership, internet customers are automatically given the car 300 below invoice, no haggling. But, since the car is a leftover, not sure what they would do.

Either way, you need to get it under invoice due to the '04 Maxima already selling off the lots. No '03 Maxima is worth anywhere near the sticker price now. Don't fall victim to the other "environmental" packages they try and sell you (paint protective stuff) or any other dealer add on's. Be firm and polite in your negotiations and you'll get a good deal.

did you all know that larger car companies that own many dealerships actually buy the car for as much as 4k-5k below the invoice ?
The invoice price is the price the company would pay if they bought that car and that car only... but when they buy 3...4...5 thousand cars they get a massive discount... that is why they always want to sell you a car on their lot. special order cars they do not get as good a deal on.

I think $27,500 was not bad for Feb'03. The $6000 below MSRP deals were around from About April-->June '03.

saw an ad for '04 SE auto with spoiler(ette) for $24,888. I think I would have bought an '04 if it weren't for the Oldsmobile grille that Datsun put on it. Did I see that now even Nissan sells aftermarket grilles? I think i saw a polished Altima grille with Nissan logo in the accessory shop at the dealer.
