Gauge cluster bulbs! WOW, not cheap!
Gauge cluster bulbs! WOW, not cheap!
Well, I took my guage cluster apart today on my 2000 SE to install my new guage bezel and custom guage rings. (I wish I could post pics...help?) Anyway, while I had it apart, I called up some Nissan dealers to get some pricing on the bulbs behind the cluster. There appears to be 6 bulbs in total for just the guages alone. The other 16 are for the "dummy" lights. Man, that's 22 bulbs in total! Well, I get some prices on the ones for the guages, and guess what...they run about $15.00-$17.00 a piece!
It appears that about two of them are 3Watts and the other 4 are 1.4Watts. The bulb comes as a whole assembly (bulb with its own connector to twist into the cluster). I think Nissan knew what they were doing in making it difficult to buy parts aftermarket, because you can't find these bulbs anywhere on the market. They are an odd size and actually, what IS the model number? On the bulb it says "A14V" and on the connector it says "V-2". At least my '95 wasn't all that bad to replace the bulbs, the gauge bulbs were #194/168 which are very inexpensive. Well, I just wanted to shed some light on you guys if you're ever wondering what type of bulbs are behind there and the cost of each to replace. Time to get a set of nice reverse indiglos, but that's another story, since these are rare for the 2000-2001 models. Man this sux!

people that say they make hot spots have never used the led bulbs themselves...Although LED's have a more direct beam pattern, they will still light up the gauges perfectly. You are filling hardly any space at all, and led bulbs will fill that space and more. I have now done this led mod on several cars and we have had no problems with hot spots or inconsistent lighting.

My chrome gauge rings are custom made by myself. I work in a wood, plexiglass, plastics, etc. type of factory. We deal with all types of plexiglass in all different thicknesses and colors. One type of interesting type we deal with is "mirror" plexiglass. It's almost like a mirror except it's 1/8" thick and is not as fragile. Looks really hot when shining and reflecting. I routed some rings to fit my guages on a CNC machine router we have at work. I wish I could post some pics of what my cluster looks like. This will give you a general idea of what I'm talking about. Can anyone help me with posting pics?

The 4th gen gauge rings will fit a 5th gen bezel. It just takes a little routing out of the smaller temp and gas gauges. The bigger speedo and tach gauge fit perfectly. Actually if you go with an aluminum bezel the small rings will fit perfectly on that. They did on mine.
Check out my web page there is a pic with my SE gauges and an aluminum bezel and chrome gauges rings.

scroll down the page. it's the second to last set of bulbs....these come already with the base, so it's a straight swap from old to new. i got 4 bulbs. there is no need to swap all of them because i dont' think anyone has complained that the turn signal lamp is too dim. i changed only the border ones, the ones lighting the gauges. i swear, if i took a picture of how they were, i don't think you'd actually see the light. it was so dark.
in any case, it could have been THESE bulbs, or the resistors built into them. take a stab at yours if you want. my job is done though, i'm accepting the light output of my gauge cluster.
