You need to make sure the piece is completely clean or it'll bubble up or not adhere properly. Use soap/water then follow up with rubbing alcohol.

Are you talking about the spark plugs cover or the->

valve cover aka rocker cover?

The spark plug cover is the one with Nissan 3000 V6 on it.
The valve cover is the dull aluminum.

although my signature doesnt show it, i painted mine black and cut out the nissan lettering and v6. what you need to do is clean it really well using palmolive (degreaser) then make sure not to touch it once you clean it with your bare hands. make sure its totally dry and then spray a light coat. Let that sit for like 20-30 then go back and cover up what you missed, but keeping the coats light and NOT heavy. I did about 5 coats of high temp mat-black then 4 coats of high temp clear coat. $hit came out awsome!! i will post pics soon.
