Eh Dave, Questions? What is your poor man CAI? Can you describe what you did? Any pictures? The intake I made (stillen like) is great now because it is cold here in Minneapolis, but I am worried about the hot summer gets here. I was thinking of a K&n drop filter and building a pipe to draw cold air somewhere. Anyway let me know what you did.
Thanks, Kajeno.

Do a search on "OSCAI" in the 5th gen forum to find your info.

The Poorman's CAI is extremely easy to make since it uses the stock airbox and intake tract. Underneath the intake pipe that runs to the top of the radiator, there is a 2.5" elbow that goes from the intake pipe to a large resonator box under the battery. You simply pop this 2.5" elbow out and pop in a piece of 2.5" shopvac hose. Take the hose and run it underneath the car. I also bypassed the upper resonator (between the MAF and throttle body) and added a K&N panel. The great thing about the stock airbox is that it has a great ram-air setup already. Bypassing the resonators, adding a slightly better filter, and running more intake piping makes for a quiet and good flowing setup, IMO. The setup looks COMPLETELY stock whne you pop the hood. Bypassing the resonators gives the intake a subdued growl which something it doesn't have stock. The lower intake pipe flat out works because I've found road sand in the filter. It would take a pretty strong vacumn to pull a piece of sand approximately 3 feet through a 2.5" hose. Finally, the stock airbox becomes pressurized at speed which will give even more power, but won't be seen on a dyno unless you've got a huge fan blowing on the car.

Hope this answers all your questions.

Dave,

Is that neccessary to remove the upper resonator?

Also, since a lot of people said K&N panel filter won't provide much gain, I assume we can still use Nissan filter and still gain some hp with this setup.

you are saying 2.5'inch piping1

others said tha they got a 2 inch join and put 3 inch piping in
how does that work if u said the hole is 2.5 inches
i just want to clarify this
also when u popped the elbow out
how did u make sure the piping fit snug and such
how did u hold it firmly in place

thnx.

If you don't want the K&N, then get a Fram filter. The F-Body guys say it flows just as good on the dyno. BTW the filter for the Max is the same part number as the 93-01 F-Body.

The 2.5" vacumn hose (Seats brand) is somewhat pliable and it literally pops right into intake tract opening. I'm not kidding. I used some silicone glue to secure it.

I did something similar with a few variations. Instead of Sears vac, I used some vac hose I had lying around the house. I went to home depot and used 2" rubber hos coupling. It says 2" but its actually 2.5" and stretchable so it worked out well. I also used a wide mouth picker upper thing at the lower part of my splash guard. I put the K&N filter in just because my 60K service is coming up anyway and I like the idea of a reusable filter. I have a stillen lip sitting in my garage that I'll get around to installing, and when I do I'm going to fabricate something that goes between the lower left nostril and my shopvac hose. This should prove to be a more effective ram air. Tomorow, I'm going to seal the space between the airbox and the stock intake piping, as it is not a direct fit. Hopefully this will quiet down the car a little and give a tighter fit for totally cool air.

ok. can one of you guys take pictures of the setup and post exact step by step instructions for us dummies? does this mod give more power than stillen intake or cai? and will it work on 4th gen with foglights?

Re: 5th gen version

Interesting...looking at pictures of stock Y2K intake, the setup already makes air flow better than the 4th gens with bigger air inlet, shorter distance from the inlet to the air box, and bigger airbox. I think the 4th gens will benefit better from the OSCAI than the 5th gens...what do you guys think?
