Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!

Thanks to this forum I was able to find the power again in my 2000 SE!! For months the dealer was scratching his head trying to figure out bad acceleration at 3800rpm and above. "Wait till the SES light comes on" they said. Sorry, I can't wait that long.
Doing exhaustive searches on this forum, I narrowed it down to the MAF sensor. (Thanks to a great price from DAVE B). After installing it, my power has come back, and NO LAG!!!

Thanks again everyone!!!

At what point does that dumb remark below my name go away? (I need to read the FAQ and IMPORTANT threads before posting a question). I've been a member almost 2 years!!

Thanks,

Bill

How do I know if there is a loss in the acceleration at the higher RPMs? My car feels a little slower than when I first got it, but is the MAF sensor really to blame or is my car just showing it's age? It's hard to tell.

Correct me if I'm wrong (which I prob. am), but if your MAF was bad in the first place, wouldn't the light be on? Also, they don't go bad do they? They just "blow"? Maybe I am wrong, if I am, lemme know and I'm gonna grab the newer one. Thanks

I think when the MAF "blows", the ECU goes into limp-mode and it won't rev much above 2500rpm. But in a bunch of posts I researched, some people were saying that the MAF could go partially bad WITHOUT setting off the SES light. This was evidently (and luckily) my case!

BTW, I looked at the actual sensor inside the MAF tube and it appears to be a thin plastic-type strip that the airflow passes. Some previous posts have said it's a thin wire, but it looked more to me like one of those Listerine Cool Strips placed sideways.

Oops, I have to correct myself! I took the sensor out of the tube and it's actually more like a thin piece of metal mounted sideways. I noticed that the edge (where the air hits it) was dirty, and a little dirty around the base, so I used electrical cleaner on it and it's super clean now. Maybe that's what was causing it to partially work? I don't have the time to swap it out with the new one for a test, so I'll just have to assume that's what was wrong with it!
