want some manual transmission fluid for my 01 SE. Got Any??

 

I have several different fluids that will work very well in your application.
Nissan recommends 80w-90 GL-4 in their manual trasmissions, and you will need 5 quarts (9.6 pints).

If you want to stick with Nissan's recommendation, AMSOIL offers and excellent GL-4 80-90...the bad news is that product is only available in gallon containers. Price is $14.90/gal ($19.10 retail), shipping for two gallons would be $6.70, only addition would be your applicable sales tax.

Another AMSOIL-recommended gear oil would be a GL2 thru GL5 rated 80w-90, and it is available in quarts. This product is approved for GL4 applications. Price is $5.85/qt ($7.65 retail). Shipping for 5 quarts would be $5.55, plus tax.

Another good choice would be AMSOIL Series 2000 75w-90. This is AMSOIL's top of the line product. It is GL2 thru GL5 rated, and it's also available in quarts. Price is $7.20/qt ($9.20 retail) and shipping for 5 would be $5.55 plus tax.

I have customers each of these products with great success. Although not a scientific test, I have some photos taken of a magnetic drainplug that came out of a car with >60K on AMSOIL gear oil, and it was essentially free of deposits (wear metals). I have serviced many of these transaxles, and some of the drainplugs (after using petroleum gear oil) look like they're growing hair...really nasty. Although the first product I mentioned is available only in gallons, the price for two gallons is essentially the same as 5 quarts of the GL-5 rated product.

I remember reading a thread about which tranny fluid was the best for maxima. I remember people saying to stay away from GL-4 I believe? I'm not sure if it was GL-5 or GL-4. Any ideas?

Recommend you check your owner's manual, but my reference guide states GL-4 is the recommended fluid. The additives in some GL-5 lubes will attack the soft metals in transmissions, but the chemistry in AMSOIL is such that it won't...as such, AMSOIL Tech Services recommends it for use in GL-4 applications. The conservative thing to do is to opt for the GL-4 80-90 (AMSOIL Product Code AGT)...it's less expensive than the GL-5 lube and it's exactly what Nissan recommends....it will work great for you.

 

Will I able to tell the difference when shifting? I know people who felt much difference when they used Redline MT-90 but some felt no difference.

How often do you recommend changing the fluid? I only got 21k miles on my car.

 

Oh and how much again for GL-4 80-90? Do you take payapl? Thanks.

Concerning the difference, you might notice a slight improvement in your shift quality. Synthetics generally lubricate better than petroleum oils do, so you may feel that reduction in friction in your gearshift. The real difference will be in lower operating temps and reduced wear over the long haul...this will equate to increased component longevity.

Concerning your question about drain intervals, AMSOIL Synthetic Gear Lubes last much longer than conventional petroleum gear lubes do. AMSOIL states that in non-commercial passenger vehicles operating under normal conditions, their synthetic gear lubes do not have to be drained; but, you can't go wrong by staying with Nissan's recommendations...

I have never used Redline, but I'm sure it's a good product. I have had > 20 years experience using and selling AMSOIL products and they are definitely top quality...I have customers running AMSOIL in some very expensive hardware including everything from 12 cyl BMW's, a number of M3's and 5-series, Mercedes, Corvettes, Ducati motorcycles, expensive trucks, you name it. I also have a near 100% retention rate with customers/downline dealers, so folks are generally happy with the products.

No need to change any gaskets when changing the fluid...drain plug torque setting is 11-14 ft-lb
