Shine tires with motor oil?

I heard last night on tv that using motor oil on your tires gives it the showroom shine and is not harmful at all for your tires. Except for getting some on your rims this seems like it's an ok idea. Anyone ever tried or any thoughts on this?

i'd just go to autozone and get a can of Eagle One Wet Tire Shine. i don't like the idea of oil being flung onto the car by centrifugal force of the spinning tires. my $.02

Sounds ghetto and I (also) thought oil makes non-neoprene rubber like that in tires swell up and disintegrate.

It's not massively shiny, but one bottle of tire gel has lasted me much longer than I had expected it to. I don't apply it very heavily though.

Personally, I have never heard of this. But IMHO, I would not consider it for a variety of reasons.

- Motor oil does not possess any sort of UV protection
- Motor oil, as Bman said, will cause the eventual breakdown of the tire
- Motor oil is not designed for protecting parts that will be exposed to the elements in general

It also won't dry, which will cause it to attract dust.

3M Rubber Treatment & Tire Dressing is all you need. Get a new spray bottle for it (the one it comes with sucks and leaks) and apply it lightly and spread with an old paint brush. This is the only tire treatment you need. Not ultra-glossy, but looks real nice.
