Disable Homelink?

Okay.... I'm sure this subject has been brought up, and I searched and searched the forums before posting this, but I didn't see anything. If this is a repost, please forgive me...

I have a 2000 SE, and I setup the homelink device to open my garage door. No problem, works great. Here is my question. Homelink works whether you have your keys in the ignition or not. Does this mean that someone could simply bust my window, hit the button, and walk into my garage? Does the homelink transmitter disable if the Factory Alarm goes off, or if it is activated?

Before I try busting my window to test this, I thought I'd ask first!

I was joking about busting out my window...

By the amount of misquitoes that tried to carry me away this morning when I walked to my car, I may wait for a cold front before leaving it rolled down!

I guess what I need is a factory manual. I bought the car used and it didn't have one. Maybe that will explain what exactly the homelink system does in the scenario above.

About rolling the window down though.... I guess the only reason I didn't consider that was because I didn't know if the car had a shock sensor on the factory alarm and whether it had anything to do with disabling the homelink system.

Thanks!

I don’t know if you’re still joking, but if you use homelink because you have a garage, why don’t
you just put the car IN the garage?

Ahhh, good question. Because one side has a 2K3 Envoy and the other has my home gym. If I had to get the car in there, I could, but not without arranging some stuff, so it's not practical for everyday stuff. For a hurricane, yeah, but not everyday.

I see. Then I would suggest you disable the homelink by clearing its memory by holding down the two outer buttons until you get a fast blink, and then use a hand held remote from now on that you lock in the glove box or hide somewhere.

So I take it then that even if the factory alarm is activated, the homelink system works, huh? Dang.

Yes, there's no connection between homelink and the factory alarm. Now I can see a situation where someone will bust your driver's main window to get to the homelink, not knowing it's deactivated. The alarm would never go off because there's no need to open the door. Perhaps you should then consider replacing your sun visor with a plain one so a potential thief would see there's no purpose in busting the window.

when you think about it, its really no different than leaving a garage door opener in your car. I dont remember if the homelink is cleared if you disconnect the battery, I dont believe it is. In that case, just wire up something so once the key is out of the ignition or the alarm is activated, the homelink doesnt get power.
