failed 5spd tranny... advise needed.

i have a noise that continues to get louder as the week goes on... went to a trans. shop today and they were not 100% sure, but they seemed to think it was an input shaft bearing failing. so, the owner said that 90% of the time i can replace a manual trans. for the price of repairs... so fixing it may not be worth it. so i started looking around and i found a 5spd from a 98' w/ 65k on it... for $500 w/ a 9mo. parts warranty. worth it or not? or should i get a second shop to look at it. i just don't have much $$ to blow and $500 seems like a deal for me... and since i can install this in an evening, the $500 is all i will pay.

I just spent $1024 on a rebuild that i already pulled from the car myself. the cheapest used 5sp i found around denver was still around $1000.

I would buy the cheap one and put that in, but keep in mind that you might encounter the same problem again soon.

Imput shaft bearing will make a noise when the Clutch is released...Neutral take your foot off the clutch and listen to a noise in the tranny....and noise during the movement of the car is a differnt bearing....Wait for the tranny to blow, may never, then do it

Eh, if you are keeping it that long than just buy that '98 tranny and slap it in. If you were keeping it longer I would say to shim the diff bearings and replace them.

$500 is the best you will find....get it.

somehow i found a '00 trans with 33k miles on it for $500...but i doubt that find is often.

yeah, it will be delivered to my work on monday... but i'm guessing by the end of this month the car will be gone. i just have a feeling that this car is going to turn into a headache... so its time to get rid of the Max... maybe a 2003 6spd will be in my future...
