Help please!!!!output shaft leaking!!!!!!!!!!
Help please!!!!output shaft leaking!!!!!!!!!!
so i replaced my passenger side axle, and when i pulled it out, a metal ring(what i thought was the seal)came out with it. so i put it on the new axle in the same place it was on the other axle, and slapped it in. everything went so smooth, i should have known better.
i started seeing drips the next day, and went to napa and checked out the seal to see what it looks like. it didnt have the metal piece at all, it was all rubber, like a normal seal. so today i got under there to check it out, and the metal piece wasnt in the hole at all. so i gently tapped it in, thinking how cool it was that it was so easy. half an hour later, there was a huge puddle under my car. now it is coming out like crazy! im sure it empty by the time im done with this message. i cant find anything in my chilton's about it.
does anyone have experience with this particular part, and could you help me out please?

Okay you replaced the axle ONLY correct? The metal "seal" is just a dust cover. When you "tapped it in" you pobably misaligned the real tranny output shaft seal and made it leak(ie.. tapping on it pushed it in too far). What you probably need to do is go back to Napa, buy a new oil seal and replace it. This seal is installed in the tranny(where you put the axle in) and not on the axle shaft. Here is a picture of the seal. http://www.cybrrpartspro.com/Chilton...961CH07_5.HTML
No I have had a leak for months on my tranny...replaced the seal many times and still leakin..went to a trans shop and let them deal with, took a week to figure out that the metal ring was pushing the seal in ever soo slightly causing it to leak...Verdict: take that metal ring off...it is not needed

Its a metal ring...The tranny shop charged me 4 hours worth of work to figure out what was causing the leak...they replaced the seal twice, and finally took that metal ring off

well i just replaced the seal, and ill be damned if i could get that thing all the way in! i mean, it is pretty much in, but there is just a tiny bit still sticking out. and i went ahead and just put the metal ring back on, it didnt seem to be pressing on the seal with any pressure. i hope i didnt make a mistake. maybe i should have listened to you...oh well we'll see
i dunno i havent put gear oil in yet. im tired. im gonna do it tomorrow. i hope not. what a PITA that was! the hardest part was trying to put the seal in. i had an installer, but it still just would not go in all the way. i was pounding pretty hard too! that kinda bothers me. im worried about the fact that its not completely in. oh well. if it leaks, im taking it to a shop.
Reman Driveaxle Dust Covers?
I'm in the same Fix. The reman driveaxles I'm installing don't have the little "dust covers" that are present on the original driveaxles. I noticed that the interior surfaces of the original dust covers were moist, but the original axle seals have not been leaking. I'm concerned that without the dust covers, gear oil will leak out of the differential. Any thoughts?
Good link Jeff. I'm about to do this job and that was a good reference page. I'll make sure I go get a seal/dustcover tomorrow before I do the job next week.
This seal that we're talking about is referred to as the dustcover on that page right?
