Help Identifying a Couple Noises
Help Identifying a Couple Noises
Some of you may remember me posting about how I got a '95 SE with 180k miles needing unidentified work for $800. Well I've been picking away at it trying to identify and do each repair on my own and am proud of myself so far. I just finished replacing the front drivers side axle as the CV joint was shot. It took care of several noises and needed to be done but (sigh) I still have a couple to figure out that didn't vanish with the old axle.
Any thoughts?...
1. Kind of a dull popping sound when turning the steering wheel. This isn't to be confused with the loud clicking sound when taking off from a stop with the wheel turned that I did have with the bad CV and is now gone. This feels more like something is not lubed or possibly shot in the steering assembly. Kind of like metal on metal that is being forced to give a little with each dull pop when turning the wheel (especially obvious at very slow speeds like parking). Feels and sounds like its coming from front drivers side wheel area.
2. A mild yet constant hum out of the front passenger side wheel area that gets very load (and serious sounding) when making a right turn at speed (25mph+). Swerving type motions to the right at speed bring it out most. Swerve to the left, no sound, swerve to the right, big time sound (hum). If it wasn't so loud in the turn, you probably wouldn't even notice the minor hum thats always there when moving but it is. The noise does not go away when putting the auto tranny in neutral so its not tranny related.
As usual I appreciate ALL suggestions!
Chris
