Automatic seatbelt - convert to manual?
'94 GXE auto
It has an automatic shoulder belt as you all know.
Is it possible/feasible/recommended to convert it to a manual shoulder belt?
Would it still be safe in case of collision? If so, where would I go for such conversion?
I'd end up with two belts that'll have to be managed, but I'm considering
letting my mother drive this car, and she hates the automatic belt. She feels as if she's being choked, she says...

HOWEVER the canadia models I believe did
I don't know why people have posted the car wasn't designed for fixed seatbelts-I'm sure USA models were they only ones "blessed" with these seatbelts. I use to like the Eagle Talon, and I read a report about how a guy had converted his to canadian fixed belts. All the hard points/structural points were common. He had to get new b pillar trim, seat belt attachment points both up high and low. I think he got a new console, but didn't technically need it. You could probably get the parts from Canada. I think the only part of install to becareful, was installing the inertia parts in the correct direction, so that the correct forces would cause belt tightening, etc... The upper attachment point on fixed belts is in better position. Even in 91 consumer reports commented that the motorized belts fit too far forward/loosely on tall occupants. An autobody shop could probably do the switch. The only problem is that the US is so law suit happy. Maybe they would make you sign a waiver?? If you did convert you probably wouldn't the ability to sue Nissan in the future if the need arose-but fixed belts would probably be more safe. Technically it is probably illegal to change belts-but if people can install aftermarket 3, 4,5 point seatbelts, or disable airbags, then it should be OK here, following that logic. The best thing??about the automatic belts is that Nissan stands behind them and repairs them for life-far better than say Ford that has all these tempo drivers driving around with the belts stuck midtravel. I think when all the motorized parts supply is depleted, that they would have to convert to fixed belts-but maybe they would just say scrap the car... Anyway if you did convert, the 92 with airbag and 93 would be the most "legal" since they would have one SRS airbag.
