Going to track- what precautions should I take when taking out stereo?

I have a pretty simple setup with my stereo, and am just checking out what I should do when I take my box out when I go the track. Months ago when I was getting my car lowered, I took my subs out. To my surprise, when I tried to hook up the subs, there was no power. I figured out I had blown out my amp, probably because the wires in the trunk were touching.

Before I take my subs out, I want to make sure I don't blow anything again. I read something about taking out the fuse first, so that would prevent things from blowing. If this isn't true, I was planning on wrapping the sub wires with electrical tape while not in use. I was thinking though that the residue on the bare wires when I take the tape off might mess with the signal to the subs. Any truth to this?

Ideas?

It certainty wouldn’t hurt to remove the fuse before disconnecting your sub box but isn’t essential as long as the positive and negative wires from the amp don't touch. Most definitely tape them off once you have them disconnected, and be sure to wrap them separately. Don’t worry about the tape reside you should be ok. If it does cause any interference you can always cut the wire for a fresh connection.

Pull the fuse, no need to tape.
