best quality CD-R / CD-RW ?
i have a TDK veloCD 52x cd-rw drive. burns cd's really quick and hasn't broken yet! i heard hp is good too. stay away from cen-dyne or sony, ive gone through each of those and they broke... also keep in mind that dvd burning is out there and prices are getting pretty cheap for that and you can still make CD-R's
I've got a cendyne and its awesome. Cendyne just rebadges other drives so you need to know which one to get. Mine is a rebadged lite-on. As for cd-r's, you want to look for ones made in Japan with a darker bottom. They are made by taiyo yuden and are the best cd's you can buy. FujiFilm used to always be taiyo yuden, but now sometimes you need to be careful as they make cheap ones now. To check the quality of your cd's look for a program called CDRid. Anything with long strategy dye is the kind you want.

As for CD-Rs, I can say from personal experience: stay away from Verbatim and Kodak. One way to check the quality of a CD-R is to break it. If the foil is on the top of the disc, it's cheapo and will scratch real easy. Be careful about using pens on those types of CD-Rs. If the foil is in the middle of the disc (between two layers of plastic) then it is much better protected, but also probably costs more.
VERBATIM at sams club
i have nvr had back experience for over 2 years, i buy a 100 pack all the time. works good wven when scratch and you can write on it w/o anything hapening

I think CNet did a CD-R comparison a while ago. Imation is one of the ones that performed well, and happens to be my disc of choice. I've historically had problems w/ Sony and Hi-Val (or whatever it's called now)

Why would you want to continue to buy CD-R's when you can buy a couple of CD-RW's for the same price and use it over and over and over and over and over and over again? Get my point.
I just started using 1 CD-RW and have burned on it about 5 different times. Over the long run you will save money with CD-RW.

kinda off subject but STAY AWAY FROM OFFICE DEPOT cdrs and cdrws. the silver lining will come off if left in a hot car for too long. over this past summer, 4 of my office depot cdrw met the same fate.

When I had the stock Bose system in the car I stuck to Memorex CD-R's.
Fuji, Kodak, Verbatim and a couple of other brands used to skip after a times of use.
My stock Bose headunit used to tear up cd's like crazy, after a month or so they would be scratched beyond the point of no return. Now I have a Pioneer 6400cd headunit. Still using the Memorex CD-R's with out one problem and no scratching.
Kojiro_FtT has a good point also, the price is very cheap on the CD-R's now.
The write speed for CD-Rs (assuming you have a quick burner) is MUCH faster than CD-RWs.
Anyway I usually stockpile a whole stack of CD-Rs (mostly for backups and music) and a handful of CD-RWs (for docs and presentations...when one floppy won't do).
I've had no problems with my silver TDKs.

Also, are you sure your mp3 player has CD-RW capability? Just want to confirm before you go by some and get your feelings hurt. Cost of CD-R's shouldn't be a factor since they're on sale so often. Just wait until they're on sale/rebate for $4.99 and buy a 50 pack (that's for the last spindle i bought.....no-name brands get even cheaper). Don't much see CD-RW's on sale too often.
