hand-brake and battery lights are ON

I have a Maxima 95. I was driving this morning, when suddenly the red lights for hand-brake and battery came ON. The hand-brake lever is OFF, I checked the alternator's belt - all seems to be fine. I got a new battery 3 months ago.
The position lights used to be off while hand-brake lever was on, and turned on while lowering the lever. This is not the case anymore: position lights are off regardless of the hand-brake lever on/off.
Thanks for any brainy ideas!

Yep, the alt. is on its way out. Mine lit up for a while. I knew it was my alt. but pushed it. One day comming home from work the lights dimmed and car turned off and I was stuck in traffic. If I was you i'd replace it asap.Trust me , its now fun being stranded.

check your harness that goes to the alt. I had both lights and my harness got spliced. It has two connections to the alt.

Thank you all for replying guys. It was the alternator indeed. I had it replaced a while ago. I was confused about the hand-brake light, but I found the explanation for it. When the alternator dies, the control system turns off the front lights to conserve energy, and the front lights are related to the position of the hand-brake.
