Trunk pass-thru - why so narrow?

Bought a new TV stand this weekend, and went to fit it into my car, thinking ok, width wide it's all gravy....opened up the trunk and bam, why is the pass-thru so darn narrow? i had to lay down the passenger seat and drive with the stand balancing on my shoulder so i could shift just to fit it into the car....you'd think with such a large trunk and being a roomy sedan it would be able to accommodate larger items in the pass-thru section....has anyone cut this to make it larger? Was thinking of going nuts on it with a dremel but wasn't sure if it would impact anything if I did that....

I still think I should be able to fit more into my car than into the wife's Ford Focus hatchback.... (and i know where the armrest folds down is for skis, but figured what's the point of having the ability to fold the seats down for extra storage if you can't fit large objects there?)

It may be narrow, but the Max is made to haul a$$ not TV stands... and PS... please don't compare (in any respect) the Max and a Ford 'anything'... Fords say "were not worthy " to the MAX.

Yea, I dont drive my car like an idiot, I just wanted to put a freaking TV stand in it -- and as much as I hate American cars, the Focus would have been able to fit the damn thing in there, with room to spare, and with room for the driver to drive the car on the way home.

How can you compare the cargo space of a hatchback versus a sedan? That just doesn't make sense.
My wife's station wagon can carry more than my car too, but is that a fair comparison?

Well, when one car can carry such wide items, and another can't because of a large black piece of plastic, I believe that's a pretty decent comparison. Cargo space is one thing, but there's absolutely no reason that the seats should even fold down if you aren't going to be able to fit long/wide items through that space. Skis are one thing, large items are completely different. My original post was just to see if I cut that piece to make it wider, if it would affect anything. Instead I get responses akin to "YO DOODZ YOUR MAX IS 4 GOING FAZT!@" -- Sorry I asked, next time I'll stick to questions about driving 130mph on a crowded highway or how me and my friends who all paid for our cars with mommy and daddy's money can best do donuts in the middle of busy intersections, etc.

Torsional rigidity? I remember with my TL they said the reason why they didn't have any split folding seats was because of torsional rigidity.

I think it's made for more stiffness that the Maxima already lacks.
