Need Help Quick: Starting problems after having RVM underdrive pulley installed...
I just had a mechanic install my RVM underdrive pulley on my 2001 GLE. After the installation the car was hesitant to start and threw an SES light. The car has hesitated to start before the crank pulley install, but thats not the point. The SES code was P1335 and it means (according to Nissan Tech) the crankshaft position (reference) sensor, which is the one that reads off the crank pulley, was bad. So i went to my local Nissan dealership and had the sensor replaced, because thats what the Nissan tech said i HAD to do in order to fix it. Well after $154 for parts and labor (sensor was $73 + tax and labor was $69 + tax an hour even though it only took about 15 minutes to install.) Im still having the starting problem. The crankshaft timing is off or something because the car stutters and doesnt want to crank, but it will eventually start, and once started it runs fine. Whats the deal???...It cant be the sensor because i just had the damn thing replaced and i would be willing to bet i didnt even need it replaced to begin with. Anyway, if anyone has any info to help me or knows what to do to fix the problem, please let me know ASAP...I really do need some help on this guys. Thanks in advance.

My guess without even reading the whole post:
RVM pulley is missing the timing ring. The crank sensor reads the notches on the timing ring... if they are not there, you will have problems... your crank sensor was never bad to begin with...

The 2k and 2k1 pulleys need that timing ring (as mentioned above). My 2k2 doesn't and I put an UR pulley in with no problems whatsoever. Some places lump all 5th gens together, so you might have gotten a 3.5l pulley instead. Also, make sure whoever installed it didn't take it off...
So Jeff92se....if i take the ring and change its position (that is if the timing ring is the one held in by the allen screws) it should fix the problem? how do i know which way to install the ring?
I would carefully try to compare the timing rings from the oem to the RVM unit. Make sure the magnets or whatever are in the exact same location relative to the crank key and that they are the same distance relative to the crank angle sensor.
Thanks alot Jeff...ill take it by my friends shop again 2morrow and have him take a look at the 2 of them...so where are the magnets located?? im still trying to figure out if i have the timing ring, it is the little ring that is held on by the four allen screws right?? thanks again
I'm not too sure as I'm not 100% familar with the 5-gen udps.

I thought the 2002 + has the timing ring/sensor and the 2000-2001 does not?

so im gettin 2 different answers....which one has to have the ring...the 2000/1s or the 2002/3s??? and if it does have the ring should changing the position of it solve the problem??

The ring does not have magnets on it, it is made of (or supposed to be) a manetic material. There where two problems with the timing ring on the RVM pulley. Some where made with a non magnetic material so the Cranshaft position sensor could not read it. Some had one of the little teeth off by about an 1/8 of an inch, causing hard starts. Either way you are screwed unless you get a new ring that is properly made.
Then you still have the problem of no hardened sleeve over the area that the crankshaft oil seal rubs against, which will eventually cause an oil leak. See the sticky in the General forum for more info.
I would just spend the $180 or so on an unorthodox pulley and know that you will not have any more problems. The cheaper pulley has already cost you more than you saved and it still isnt right.
