My Tranny is about to take a :007: Dump on me !

It has slipped 5 times on me since Saturday. ... Im really starting to think that everything I was told about Japanese cars was a crock of CRAP ! My car has spent more time at Nissan than my Mustang (10 years ) and my WS6 ( 3 years )......

I dont have tiome to take it, but I called and they need to check it out. With my luck, the car will act when they drive it and they will give me the usual " we didnt see nothin...huh , huh, huh..."....

We shall see. They did tell me I have a right to a rental if the tranny needs to be replaced. I will take my guage pod down, which I had mounted , ready for the NX install in the next few weeks. Im at 57k miles, and the powertrain runs out at 60k, so I hope im in luck....Im really starting to regret buying a Nissan. I think Im back to domestics after this car.

kloogy....you have over 50K miles on your tranny and you haven't changed your fluid yet! Take it over to Quality Nissan like I did and have your tranny looked at or even replaced!

OMG bro, you've never replaced your tranny fluid Bro, I flushed mine out with syntethic fluid at 26K miles. Even then the OEM Nissan fluid was already changing color to a brown shade. It all depends on how hard you drive. Ive seen them go as long as 70K w/o being flushed but that babied. I know you dont drive like a granny man So after 50K+ w/o having it flushed, I cant say im too surprised.

transmissions don't die because you haven't replaced the fluid in 50 thousand miles.

I know what you mean about people telling you how good Japanese cars are. I had a 94 Dodge intrepid and that car never gave me any trouble..just got the usual oil change done. After that i got a Honda Accord(99) and a 2001 Max SE (auto) and I've spend lots of weekends at the dealer for fixes.....and i dont drive them too hard!!!

I think part of the problem is car makers are putting more power in the cars but not beefing up the transmission.

Companies like BMW and Mercedes put more R&D into their trannys

It has nothing to do w/domestic vs. foreign. Beating the crap out of the car on a daily basis and expecting it to perform makes no sense.

Thats alot of mileage with no tranny fluid change- I've been told by my mecanic
that no more than 25K - so I do it every 15K

The bright side Good thing you're under warranty!

Changing the tranny fluid at 30,000 miiles is mandated in the manual.

Yeah change the fluids, drive it for a week and see if there is a difference. If not, take it to nissan ASAP before you hit 60k

Even so, if 20,000 extra miles on the fluid causes tranny failure the thing is CRAP.

Domestics know how to build an auto tranny. Japanese car makes don't expect their owners to beat on their automatic transmissions.

I'm a very car savvy person, so I'm guessing this is a problem stemming from some of your mods. These mods include your ugly shift ****, weak system, and definately your rear window spoiler.

Just messing man!

Take it to Nissan and get them to fix it ASAP! I'm sort of planning to come out there the middle of next week and we both need to be rolling 19 inches strong!

I know that I should have changed the tranny fluid sooner. But I also know that this is not the reason its acting like a

I noticed something strange today...and I wonder if its related at all. When my voltage dips under 12 , is when my tranny slips. Everytime it has slipped, I have been bumping my subs....

Could this be related at all? One time I remember I drained my yellowtop at a show, and on the way home , the tranny was acting like crap. Once it recharged, it was ok...... Hummm , just wondering ?

You dont want to come out right now Phat..Im dying from FLU !

The voltage issue sounds interesting Kloogy. Perhaps you need to do the same alternator upgrade that I did after mine died. My car came with a 110 amp and I replaced it with a 125 amp that had a dyno sheet. The new one puts out 13.xx volts at idle with all the accessories on when warmed up even with the UDP. The original alternator would drop below 12 with that scenario.

I think it could be related if the electrical system for the ECM and other items drops below 12 volts. The best way to find out is run a series of tests with your subs bumping and not bumping. If it doesn't ever slip with them not bumping, you might be on to something.

Yeah R&D as in using GM transmissions in their cars.

But what some of you mentioned about the superior quality from Japanese cars is true. Where for a number of years Japanese quality had very little holes, that is no longer the case. Most of my family own Hondas. Six in all. Five of them are Accords ranging from 97 - 2001. One is a spiffy 2003 Civic. Anyway 4 of them had trannies that slipped under 85 thousand miles. One as early as 42 thousand miles. Now 4 out of 5 of these Accords are driven by an aunt and 2 female cousins who are gentle (and I mean gentle) drivers. The fourth I know my male cousin beats to death when he drives.

I've owned 6 cars so far. A '90 325, a '92 Lincoln Towncar, a '92 Mitsu Eclipse, a '97 Subaru Legacy (my girl's), a '00 Focus ZTS and my current '03 Max.

Of these cars the Subaru and Towncar were absolute rocks. I gave the Towncar to a buddy with 338,000 thousand miles on it. SAME engine, SAME tranny. The only major change was an altenator that the previous owner made. Now I bought this car with 190k on it not expecting much. I was blown away. One thing: rough city driving kills the front end. I had to do my suspension pieces every 1 year to year and half. The Mitsu I got rid of quick. Too many glitches and servicing. The BMW didn't have too many problems, but look out! When it did-- it broke my bank account silly. Now the Focus was interesting, it was a blast to drive with good overall quality, but was plagued by recalls. 11 or so recalls for that car I think. But get this, mine was exempt from all but two recalls (replaced the plastic coverings on the A pillars (?) and the rear wheel bearings. So technically it performed flawless between me and my girl driving it constantly. My current Max (early December) so far so good except for the HID brackets and Datadots that my salesman told me I had but didn't, was added recently.

Overall I think the Japanese quality thing still has some merits but is also an outmoded cliche. But all in all whether the cars are German, Japanese, Korean or American (Heck even the Italians), I think cars are way better than they were 30 years ago.
