I guess extreme is all a matter of perspective, but it's around -12 to -18 celsius here in Ontario, Canada. Normally my car starts just fine, but since the cold temperatures, the starter makes a whirring sound once or twice or more, before it finally starts normally. The battery is fine. I parked the car in a warm +12 celsius garage today, and it started fine. I bought the car in September so I don't know if the starter is original, but is it possible that the lubricating grease in the starter is old/dirty and with the cold weather, it's just too thick for the starter to spin freely? Should I buy a new starter or is it easy to disassemble and re-lube with synthetic grease or something?

My starter is doing the same thing sometimes, it will whrrrrrr for a while and then crank over normally
I'm just going to replace mine, if you find a junkyard that sells "barely used autoparts" its only 50.00 w/ core exchange, its really annoying when the starter does that and it just makes it weak when you keep cranking it, your best bet is to replace it

 

Why would you take a chance on a used part?
There are so many quality reman companies out there. I wouldn't chance it on a used part.

Hey that's great. Maybe I'll try that. I'm just glad I have a 3rd gen. All I have to do is crawl under the car, and the starter is in plain view - nothing to remove to get at it. The 4th gen - looks like he had to remove the battery, the air cleaner/box, MAF, and some other stuff.

 

When your battery gets that cold, the internal resistance will rise considerably. therefore the battery will not be able to put out as much current.

A simple thing to try, is buy some insulation, like that pink styrafoam that you can buy in a home depot (or whatever's around you). Remove the batt and put a sheet of the styrafoam under it. You can do the same for the sides of the batt, This is something that actually comes with most jeeps bought today (at least my sisters has it ).

give it a try it'll only cost you a couple bucks.

Another thing to note, is that all of you complaining about your starters have a VG. That engine starter uses brushes, so they can become stuck, you can use a rubber hammer and give the starter a few whacks to help free up any stuck brushes.

Just as a note, anyone with a VE, does not have brushes and should never hit the starter b/c it can mess up the permanent magnets inside.

 

That's a good point and very logical one too. Just grease it with some synthetic based ngli#2 will do it. Basically, this process should be applicable to any starters out there regardless of the vehicles, just as long as the starter is detachable.

You know this really reminds me several weeks ago when I had to change my alternator to a Bosch reman. I was surprised that stupid Bosch didn't greased any one of their moving parts other than a thin layer of oil around the bushings. I was shocked, so greased them all with Amsoil Series 2000 grease. However, I was only able to take half of the alternator shell off, the other half is still dead stuck in with the stator (the copper coils). Oh well, I was able to reduced some of the annoying noises. Anyone has any idea on how to take the other half shell off the stator, please let me know. It seems like it got pressed in so damn tight. Arrgh. Oh well.

 

I'd actually like to use that rubber hammer to hit the Nissan engineer who gave the VE a better starter than the VG...also the guy who designed the cupholders, the fuel injectors (VG)....

I do, however, like the location of the oil filter, and the starter location on the VG. No hammer for that guy...

luv that VG easy starter location, easy alternator, easy oil filter hahaaaaaa luv it for the most part!! could use a little more HP and torque but hey good car
