Henri

I paid $300. But you might want to have your water pump changed too though so you're not paying for all that labor if it goes out.

using what kind of parts?! $200 is barely enough to cover a new water pump, timing belt, and cam & crank seals.

He asked about belt replacement, so I gave him an answer. whether he has one or not wasn't his question.

I replaced my water pump with the belts for under $200. $100 in labor from my favorite "shade tree" mechanic and a little under $100 for belts and pump, new not reman.

I need to have my front seal re-done, but that mechanic moved, so I need to find another one.

front seal is cake... just remove the belts and crank pulley and the seal is right there. remove, reinstall. 30 min job.

Red92MaxSE, not only do you own a car similar to mine in both trim and color, you got my feel in the "shade tree" machanic as well. Those mechanics are the way to go, the guy I had repairing my car is my best bud's dad, so go figure. He did the job in like 3-4 hours. I can't complain, new belt and pump, all for the price of like 1/3 of what was asked for if I went to an "official" mechanic.

Sorry everyone, I mean't timimg chain.

Thanks for the info, it looks like majority of the cost depends on the mechanic. I will do my research and try to find a good shade tree mechanic and purchase the parts myself and I'll make sure I include the water pump during the process.

Thanks,

Henri

Exactly which car do you have, anyway?

If you have a 93SE as your profile says, you don't have a timing belt- it's a chain and doesn't need replaced.

If you've got a GXE or an SE earlier than 92, then you've got a belt and it does need service...

Matt, Thank You!!!!

DOH!!!!!!!!!

I have a 93 SE 5 spd, so I don't have to worry about the timing chain. So timing chains never have to be replaced, wow? Thats good, matter of fact thats Great! What about the water pump, should that be changed around 100k?

TIA,

Henri

it's recommended to change them around 100-120k, but honestly I wouldn't worry about it. it not something that will blow the engine if it fails, other than leave you parked for a day or so until it's fixed. I'd just keep driving. if you start to see antifreeze drips from it, then check it out and replace when it goes.
(My car has over 200k miles on it and I believe it's still on the OE water pump!)

hey matt, i know this might be a dumb q...but since we don't put water into the radiator, won't it be more of a "coolant" pump than a "water" pump?

we DO put water in the radiator.. we also add antifreeze/coolant to it so the water freezes colder and boils hotter.
