I've had my CV(maybe CB) boots bad for over a year now... recently they started clunking alot, slowing down, while driving, turns and such. How long can I go on them? what will happen? How can I check to see if the axle still has... mmm say 10k miles on it? :O

 

You are an idiot. Do your car a favor and fix the CV Axle. I guarantee you don't have another 10k miles and even if you did, you would be foolish to continue to abuse your car.

-i drove around on bad axles for almost 2 years. (40k) then last year i replaced them
-spent 180 in tools and 2 new axles and replaced them took me about 5 hours cuz i was half drunk and i didnt have a manual. i think i herd someone post that a shop would replace them for $300-$350

Please take your car to a shop and have someone competent work on it.

The axles are already ruined. fix it ASAP before you ruin something else (like wheel bearings)..

your procrastination has already caused the parts cost to go from $20 to over $200...

 

I'm not abusing my car, I just really can't afford unnessasary fixes. I have no job right now while in school, have hardly any money left, and any nessassary fixes will have to go on the credit card. I've been driving with a window cracked in two places for over six months (washing car, sun heated to much and window cracked). It also stutters and stalls at traffic lights sometime. I would rather buy a 97 SE 5spd black with Stillen body kit, turbo, and tons of other stuff, but money is a biiiig issue for me.

 

I'd like a few original Shelby Cobra 427s also but like you money is a biiig issue for me too.

 

dude, required maintenance isn't stuff that you can just put off like a body kit..

ahh well.. it shuts off at stoplights too.. I guess you've got worse problems. keep driving, and in short enough time the car won't move at all and the problem will have fixed itself (since you have to buy a new car and all)

- i have no wheel bering problems and i did ride around with damaged CV joints for a long time but it is a bad idea and i shouldn't of taken the risk, i was in the same situation as u, and i uderstand that u dont wana do the repair if u can put it off.. but if the axles are making noises when your stoping and starting that sounds really bad (never happend to me)

Yeah, ok, my friend can help me with it in about 2weeks. I wasn't sure it was required, but that it was something like when an injector is going bad.. :P

 

dont wait till it breaks i had one break on my camry on the highway doing about 90 all of a suden a severe vibration started and i had to pull over and have the car towed

doomtoo- I hate to break it to you, but unless you have big money, at this rate you will never be able to properly maintain a turbo'd car.

Just chalk this up as a learning experience. Internetautomar(t) can get you great prices on the parts, if you do it yourself buy a FSM now! you will save money but only if you do the job properly.

According to the mechanics when I first found out the CV boots are bad, it would to easiest to just change the whole axle at about $400 total.
But I have a friend that will help me put them in and everything for $200, so I don't think the price is that off what they quoted me a year ago... Replacing both axles seems like it'd off set any damage done. I can't have ruined anything else besides the axles, and bad tire wear, right?

 

I too have had bad CV boots for at least a year. The shop quoted me like $250 bucks to replace both axles. The only reason I haven't done it yet is because when the shop noticed my boots were torn, was when they were replacing my transmission which wound up being about 2 grand, which Im still paying off every paycheck.
But seriously you should replace your axles asap if you have the money, your only asking for a more serious problem by delaying it (like me).

 

It will come off soon especially at high speed? Just fix it, BTW, that turning noise is annoying.

I think anything that has to do with the wheels turning properly is as important as putting gas in the car. Just imagine being on the highway doing 60mph and your axle breaking. Trust me i've been in a car doing 35 breaking an axle and it is some scary stuff.

But seriously, I've driven cars with bad boots/axles for long periods of time with no major problems.

Just remember that once you fix it the car will have more power.

 

i've driven on bad cv joints/boots as well due to lack of funds. but, as pretty much everyone has stated, you're driving on borrowed time.
