1999's are sexier than 2000! But is performance worse?

Just wondering, I would like the 5 speed auto and good HP / mpg numbers.

1999 4th gen or 2000+ 5th gen?

I know the 4th gens are 4speed autos.... but why does my car shift into what seems like more than 4 gears? Sorta like like 1,2,3, 4(od), 5(od?)? ... is there like 2 gears in OD or am I totally misunderstanding the concept of OD?

maybe it is playing tricks on me ... but why does it actually SHIFT then? It really does, the RPM's will drop ~200 to ~400rpm after it shifts into OD ... it's really wierd!
