Optima Battery Review

About two months ago my battery died, so I decided to invest in a better one. I picked up a blue top optima battery at sears auto, the d34m deep cycle marine battery. I keep hearing people talk about getting capacitors and better wiring for their batteries because their lights are dimming. I have done neither, but my system doesn't make my lights dim or pull down any accessories now with the optima. It also makes my car turn over much faster than I have ever seen. I never have to hold the key for more than a second, even in -40 F weather in northern Minnesota. It has close to 900 cranking amps and it really kicks. I don't know how many orgers have these, but if you are having problems with your battery, one of these batteries would help a ton! The one I picked up is optima's marine battery, but I liked the blue color and it has the extra posts for accessories that you can see in my pic below. The stats on the different batteries are pretty much the same for the deep cycles. I don't know much about the technology, but I know they are gel cells, and don't have lead plates with battery acid between them like traditional batteries. Here's a picture of my non-fancy setup, until it warms up.

Have had the blue top for over a year or so. Works fine. It has the same specs as a yellow top.

Costco sells the blue and red top.

i bought my red top for like $100 at advanced auto parts over the summer. It has no problem starting car in the bitter cold (i'm in the mountains), but there is a noticable drain on the electrical system when accesories are used. I'm looking into a grounding kit/beefier altenator.

Optimas are not as tall as the stock battery so you will need to put something under it to raise it up

If you look at my picture up top, you will see that I stacked a few small washers to tighten up the battery tie down. Bozonpjs, I have had it for two months and MN winters are dirty. The blue tops are pretty much the same as the other optimas, why would they be bad for maximas? I paid $140 at Sears auto parts, happyricefob.

i bought a redtop for my celica last night. So far it works great! It was a bit short, but they give you that plastic thing that goes on top... u just snap that underneath and it becomes just as tall as the OEM battery.

hmm... so what's the difference between the blue top and the yellow top if they have the same specs?

They're basically the same battery, except the blue top has extra terminals since it is for marine use.

red top are designed to be a cars starting battery.

yellow tops are designed to be extra batteries, not a cars single starting battery. more specifically they are designed for RVs. although they aren't meant to be the starting battery, plenty of car audio enthusiast use them this way.

blue tops are pretty much yellow tops from all i've read. they do have the extra batt post on the top, but my red top has extra threaded holes in the front. I just run a thread batt lug in there and run my stereo power wire to it.
