installing y-pipe, need some HELP!!!!!
so i got a new budget y (er LSS exhaust now) and im tryin to install it in my garage. ive got the car on ramps, and ive gotten all but 2 screws off. and those screws are none other than the ones at the cat. converter! these things are TOUGH to get off! ive put tons of WD40 on em, ive removed all the extra stuff that was makin the screws hard to get at, and ive been tryin and tryin but i cant get them to budge. ive tried sockets and vise grips and i just cant get em off. anybody had this problem, and any suggestions.....?
my friend talked to a mechanic at a transmission place about this and they said that theyd be happy to raise it up for me and try to get the screws off. but im hesitant to take them up on that offer since it is illegal to install this ypipe. would the mechanic (ive never been to this guy before) already have known this????? i wouldnt want to take it over to the place and have them make a big fuss out of it being illegal......does anybody have any idea whether a mechanic would be willing to install something illegal like this??????

The y pipe is not illegal. But yeah the mechanic can do it for you, but he will charge you am arm and a leg. I set my wrench on a way so I could hit with my feet, since it was almost impossible to breaket it lose with my hands, and the breaker bar wouldn't fit underneath the car.
Anyway I hit it with my feet once and it worked like an impact gun

i know....i need all the leverage i can get!
but i thought these things werent street legal, since it removes the 2 precats and all. is it just that as long as the main cat. converter does its job and passes emissions, than its still legal?????
so u think i should take it to a mechanic so he can raise it up for me (and get some dam LEVERAGE!)? it is most likely that this guy will let me work with him, and not charge any dough. at least that's the impression that my friend got...

If he wants to supply the lift and have you do the work, that would sound good to me. If he wants to do the work, so much the better. If all they do is loosen the bolts, then *technically* they are not the ones taking off the cats...
a cheater bar will fit under there, i did it just the other day. it is tight and u have to jiggle it a little but get about a foot long 1/2 in pipe on the end of that socket. you may need to go buy an extension for the socket, but a nice set of sockets and extensions are necessary to work on your car. just be careful and dont round the bolt off or then your screwed.
okay one of the bolts is rounded off a little bit, the other is fine...
1. what is a cheater bar and how can it help?
2. how exactly does an impact wrench work, and will it do the trick?
3. are there any other types of air tools that might work?
4. how much torque do you think is needed to get these bolts off?
5. WILL A MECHANIC BE WILLING TO HELP ME INSTALL THIS SINCE IT IS ILLEGAL??????????

I think what he means by the cheater bar is sticking a pipe on the ratchet to make it longer, I did it when I was doing my brakes. Air tools work by impact, therefore they can virtually break anything loose. I heard alot of people had mechanic do it, so I guess they don't care, I wouldn't neither.
Oh yeah freaken budget is holding my order they charged me for the y-pipe but I haven't seen it for over a month, kind of getting me ****ed off(I almost lost $30 yesterday because of that). How long did it take budget to process your order?

so an air/impact tool would break anything loose, even if the bolt is rounded off? but i still don't understand HOW exactly they work. can anyone explain in more detail? or maybe i'll just head over to the local haadware store and ask them.
ABK, that is very rare that you've ordered from Budget, and haven't gotten the ypipe in the mail in at most 7 days. ive heard very little complaints about Budget. i ordered mine on a sunday and got it that thursday! ithink its just bad luck on your part....
oh, and any more opinions on the mechanic dilemna??
