weird hum during accel in 5 speed

when i am accelorating my car makes this weird hum mostly in first and second. the hum is more intense if i am accelorating more quickly and more in the first part of each gear(the lower rpms) my friend said this could be my pressure plate but i dont know how much he knows about this problem any ideas on what it is or how hard it is to fix.

Check your tires 1st:
I had the same exact noise, everyone told me it was my bearings, I when to a tire shop to get a 2nd opinion, it turned out to be 2 worn/defective tires, replaced tires and the noise dissapeared.

I know this may sound dumb..but maybe the alternator? Doesn't it make some sort of funny noise before is goes out?

Also, if you think it might be the pressure plate..does the clutch pedal feel any different...easier or harder to push..just giving suggestions.

The only thing I have heard is that the alternator makes some sort of funny noise before it goes bad. Have you gone to the stealership for the recall?

Check this, if you haven't had the alty replaced.

is there a recall i went to that link and put in my car and it said no recalls. would there be any other signs of the alt going out cuz my lights dont dim the dome lights dont flicker and no idle issues so if there is other signs let me know.

It's not your alternator because alternator whine is independant of engine load. In other words, it won't matter if you're on the gas or not. If it's a noise that gets louder if you're on the gas, then it's something in your tranny.

It will eventually get worse. First mine only did it in forst, then first and second, within 3-4 months I could hear it all the way till 5th.

Differential bearings may not be the problems since most cases of bad bearings are only the 95 & 96 maxima's. I only know of one or two 97+ maxima's that had the bearings go.

If it is the bearings it's either an expensive tranny rebuild or a huge DIY project. I paid $1700 for new bearings, 3-4 shift assembly, new clutch, and findanza flywheel install. If I did the bearings alone it would have been around $800

Also consider wheel bearings, although if the noise varies with RPM and not speed, then I might lean toward the differential.

Drain your tranny fluid and see what condition it is, put in new fluid and see if there is a change, you may have a slight leak and being low on fluid will increasing the noise level. At least it's cheap even if it doesn't fix the problem. After that if you can live with the noise it may last a long time before rebuild, mine was replaced by the previous owner @ 100k
