wheel stud broke!!!

I was driving tonight and noticed that my front right wheel sounded like it was wobbling. the slower I went the worse it got. When I took off the tire I notice that one of the studs was missing!! I mean it broke deep into the Hub. Plus I saw that some of the studs look like the threads are starting to wear. Is there anyway to replace the one that was broken or do i have to buy a new hub?

If the stud broke off INSIDE the hub, then it will be hard to remove it. If the stud was still there, you could simply hit it with a big hammer and it will pop out. But you will have to REALLY hit it with a punch and a hammer or something. Maybe a chisel?

Once the stud is out, then you get your pair of tin snips and cut a slot out of that little side piece of metal that is keeping the stud from coming completely out. Then install the new one with a lug nut... keep tightening it until it's in all the way.

Yes, you can replace one at a time. If you are doing one, you might as well do them all. They are only a $1 at your local parts store. Good luck!

overtorqueing the nut, too loose a nut.

I have to agree. But it usually takes an AWEFUL lot of force to snap a stud. If all the studs worse kind of lose, I could EASILY see atleast one of them snapping.

I've even heard of someone able to launch so hard with slicks at the drag strip that it broke all the studs on one of the wheels. It's hard to believe that a stud was the weakest link. Usually, it's the tranny, axles, tires, etc.

But I wish I knew what caused the stud to break. Just check the torque on them. I've never heard of a stud breaking by itself like that.

Well there are plenty of really stupid mechanics out there that don't know how to use an impact wrench.

Hey guys, I just wanna give yah an update. I have 5 new studs and nuts on my hub a everything is runnging great minus the VTC ticking, but that's another chapter in the my max's life. Thanks again for your help. I'm thinking about getting an aircompressor that can be used to remove the center nut on my wheel, I plan on changing my axels soon. Does anyone know how big of a compressor that will do the job and how much ft/lbs needed to remove it?

I recently removed my axle nut for the first time with an impact wrench. In the past, I removed it with a 6 foot cheater bar and my 180 lb dad jumping on it to BARELY break it lose.

I had my impact wrench on the most powerful setting and it took 5-10 seconds to break it lose. The FSM says to torque this nut to 174-231 ft-lbs. When you first break it lose, it should take more than 231 ft-lbs. That nut is on there pretty well.

Did you use a compressor with the impact wrench, if so how big o a compressor did you use or did you use one of those electric impact guns?

I broke one of my front studs trying to get a frozen lug nut off. I had my 2 foot breaker bar and I gave it a mighty tug and it snapped right off.

Wow! I've had two lugnuts that somehow got crossthreaded. But since I always torque my lugnuts to spec, I make sure they aren't crossthreaded when installing them. So, somehow a thread broke inside and it causing it to just dig in when you're trying to remove the nut. So, I had to just really put my muscle into it with some WD-40 to help me cut new threads. The stud didn't break. I was careful to not build up too much heat, so I went slow.

It seems that with these Subzeros, people have problems with crossthreading lugnuts. Wierd.

Nmax93, yes I used an air compressor. I just don't know what size it is as far as ratings go. I just know it's an old POS that still works.
