$120 to install a Y PIPE!
$120 to install a Y PIPE!
EEK! Carboy (http://www.carboyracing.com) wanted to charge me $120 to install a Y Pipe and another $50 to throw on my cat. converter. Do they think im so newbie ricer who doesnt know how easy it is to install with the right tools?! Does anyone know of any shops in Houston (preferably the Sugarland/Missouri City area) where I can get this installed for a resonable price? Thanks!
I just got so tired of screwing around with the bolts (spent a good 6-8 hours and could only get the header bolts off, couldn't move the cat bolts at all even with a foot and a half breaker bar) that I just took it to a shop and paid $120. I could have paid a bit less (around 90-100) but at that point it was the decision between a good job with no rattles or a cheaper job from a worse shop risk extra rattles/leaks. It took them 2 and a half hours to get the fit perfect but in the end I have no rattles at all and if I ever have a problem they'll fix it for free.
I just did it myself. I did have to pay a guy $5 to take the bolts on the cat off though. Here in miami installations for stuff is pretty cheap. I paid $150 to get my whole suspension installed and new rotors and pads installed.
Do it yourself, man. It is easy.
You don't need to take it to a shop to get the bolts cut off. Just buy some rust penetrating spray from AutoZone and then go out there and spray it on all the bolts and take a hammer and tap lightly on all sides of the bolts and then spray again. Repeat this process if necessary until you can get the bolts off. I did that, and then came back a couple of hours later, and was able to get the bolts right off.
That is what I would suggest.

OMG $120+ for installation? u gotta be kidding me...
skinny me and my skinny fob friend took about 4 hours with some music and chinese noodles. we were patient and used common sense. we both pull like a **** on all those 2 14mm cats. and then we pulled like **** on all other 14mm bolts. if it won't come off, we spray and pray, chill aside, eat noodle and rice, get back to work. we had fun...
btw... $120 is like 5tanks+ of gas. 240 tacos at jack in the box... man u guys are missing out
Bring it to me here in Az, and I'll charge you 20 bucks
If I were you. I would do it my self. Y pipe is very easy to install. Just get some Pebble Blaster from Autozone. Sprayed all the bolts with it, leave it there for like 20 minutes and start removing stuff.
doesn't sound that. does it?

it took me f 4 hours. But I did it my self. The bolts that held the y-pipe and the cat were rusted 2 gether so I had to take the whole y-pipe and the cat off as one piece. I also had 2 drill the bolts out. After alot of cussing I had it off. Then a week later my clutch went out.
Well doing it yourself CAN be easy, up here in MN we see alot of heavy winters and that means ALOT of salt. Even having a 99, the cat bolts wouldnt come off, one of them HAD to be cut off. Not to mention I lost the gasket going fromthe ypipe to the cat, so I got a gap there and its loud as *** right now. So either Ill have it welded together (cat + ypipe connection) or spend money and wait for a new gasket. Even with the big a$$ gap, I still notice a improve in the top end performance, this thing pulls like a ****, cant wait to seal up the huge leak and test it out!
Worst case scenario, like BlueC said is that the bolts that connect the cat to the Y pipe are rusted away to nubs and no amount of penetrating spray or anti seize will get them off, as they aren't even shaped like a nut and bolt anymore, they are just blobs of rusted metal. That's what happened to me. Sooo.....
You take it to a muffler shop and pay them $20 to cut those bolts off with a cutting torch, and install new bolts in their place. then you drive home, jack the car up, and install it yourself. There are 3 bolts connecting each Y pipe primary to the manifolds for a total of 6 bolts there, then the 2 brand new bolts that you just had the muffler shop install between the Ypipe and cat, and if you are putting on a new cat or test pipe there will be 2 more bolts between the cat and test pipe (you should have these cut off as well as they are likely in the same condition as the Y pipe/cat bolts are). Grand total is a maximum of 10 bolts, all of which are common sizes, and the entire process should take a maximum of 2 hours, and that's if the 6 bolts connecting the Y pipe to the manifold are really really tough to get off. You could concievably have it done in like 30 minutes with hand tools, after paying to have the cat bolts cut off.

Yea all my $hit is connected now. Man, my exhaust sounds nice, not to mention all my power is back that was robbed from the leaks. It turns out the biggest leak was from the second collecter, i had 1/3 nuts on there, so ibought some new ones and its all good now. It was worth the hours of painful labor!
do it yourself...just like everyone says. I did mine in under 5 hours. It took forever for me to find a way to screw off the inside bolt to the second pipe of the y-pipe. Ohannon7 and I did his in about 2 hours. Once you what to do it's easy to do.
