Yeah, I got more problems with my 91 Max SE. It has been missing all throughout the RPM range. I changed the fuel fillter and pulled the spark plugs to check the gap. They were at a whopping .055". I closed them down to .040" or so and then fired it back up. It barely even started. I got it running to warm it up and then played with timing and that made no difference. I went and got some Bosch copper plugs gapped to .044" and put then in. In runs a little better, but not well. I got reading through some posts and thought it might be the coil. I pulled the coil wire from the distributor and it looked almost new. I then pulled the wire from the coil it was naaaaaaaaaasty. It and the coil terminal were crusted over with some green and white.....stuff like a neglected negative post of on the battery. What is up with my coil? The car has 130k and it is the original coil. Should I buy a new one and the problem will be solved? Is something else up?

1) What do you expect from 130,000 miles? Everything perfect?
2) Clean the connection as best you can. Install and see how it runs. If it still runs bad, consider buying a new coil. 130,000 change intervals for a coil is not too bad yes?

 

Buy a new coil.
Something had to cause that corrosion and it's a fairly safe bet the coil is leaking.

 

Gettting a new coil does seem like a logical option I guess. Would anything else have cause the corrosion though?

 

isn't the corrosion just from water? i thought that's what it was from but can't remember. i'd just clean her up and see how it runs. i would think that would fix your problem because i've not seen many people on here with coil problems on a vg... if any. mine has a little over 150k miles on it now and its still working fine so i'd say clean it up and see how it does.
