The only reason I can imagine you wanting to do this is for weight reduction?

yep.. The best possible place to remove weight- right off the roof!
If it would cost more than $100-150 bucks I will be hesitant to do it...

Wish I could help you, bro, but no ideas here. It sounds like it might be a hairy project. Someone here should be able to come up with a solution. Very creative bunch here these days. GL with this.

Thanks for the link... I'd sure like to still have the sunroof working though... Im hoping to just get a body shop to swap the glass out for the lightest substitute possible (tinted plexi?)

I read about a guy doing this in another car forum. This person bought a piece of plexiglass at a hardware store. He cut it to the shape of the sunroof. I will try to find it.

You'll save WAY more than 10 pounds. Anytime you replace any glass in a car, there are significant gains. I bet the glass alone weighs atleast 12-15 pounds. The motor, probably 3-5. The tracks, 2-3. That's about twice as much as 10 pounds.

Replacing just the side windows on most cars setup for the track, even manual ones, save ~60 pounds when replacing them with lucite/plexiglass.

Honestly unless this is a drag car or you are serious auto-x...why? like a 1/100 sec gain from 10 lbs just on the street? Not to mention I think all glass has to be DOT approved so be careful, you never know...and it'll probably be loud as hell on the highway.

The point of the story is...the amount of time/money spent on this mod does not produce good gains...where as a CAI would (etc etc)...bang for the buck.

If uve stripped ur car and this is the last thing left...go for it

Pointless investment. I highly doubt you will notice that big of a performance increase over the replacment.

We were going to replace our sunroof glass with plexiglass as well. I think it was going to be around $125, but then I could be imagining that price.

Also, I have read of people replacing the glass with carbon fiber panels, that way you can still keep your sunroof functional.

A Carbon fiber panel instead of glass sounds kinda sweet!

BTW you are right, its not gonna do like much of anything for my acceleration, but I was thinking it would be a bigger help for cornering... Take that heavy chunk right out from the highest point (I can imagine that the leverage that the height of that horizontal weight generates would be a good thing to lose in, say, a slalom or hard corner).

I dont know and am not the most experienced do-it-yourselfer but it would seem that removing the glass and dropping in CF would not be too tough...

And as for noise- well, it I can hear wind over my exhaust... the engine has shut down!! (its very loud. Very loud!)

I want the carbon fiber insert to, ive posted this a few times . That glass probably weighs 15lbs.

And that 15lbs means a whole lot when your final weight goal is in the 2400's. Note: without the stripped look . It is very possible.

Personally, I would never bother going through the trouble or expense of doing this mod on my own car. I'm realistic about the function of my car, and what I want it to be. And that is a comfortable car with plenty of power, decent handling, and a badass stereo. Basically, a mobile living room with performance tendencies.

However, for someone that is a TOTAL performance first kind of guy, this mod shouldn't cost too much. And a savings of 15 pounds (which is a VERY reasonable estimate for the glass alone) ESPECIALLY at the very highest point in the car, should net small, if even reliably immeasurable performance increase.

Basically, chacon son gout. To each his own.

It would be kewl to have CF hood, CF sunroof panel (moving), CF trunk on the ride! Unfortunately that would cost like um... 1200 bucks and drop um...55 pounds...? still it would look pretty rad!

Im performance oriented but not to the point of giving up any of the luxury that the car had when I got it! (well, allright, I gave up the soft ride, the quiet ride, the passenger seat (j/k)

Id be interested in hearing how you plan to do this- by removing everything in the lighter.maxdes site?

no you dont have to strip your car to make it light. You have to be a fanatic and spend lots of time on it. Most of the things I do dont cost much money. Some things do cost money ,I do both. For instance take a right angle grinder hand held, the ones that you put a 2" 80 grit sanding pad on. Find something you feel is overbuilt and grind away. Iv'e taken alot of weight of doing this. Right now i'am taking about 1/4 pound of metal off the wiper stalks and then I'll repaint them and nobody will ever know. Remember do this to 400+ componets and you have nice weight reduction.

But I also do the things that cost money I have a carbon fiber trunk not on yet. With the carbon trunk on and the spoiler deleted along with trunk springs I can see a 35-40lbs reduced there and that will almost put me in the 2600's. When I finish some other projects I will get a hood that weighs 10-15lbs ,that will save 30-35lbs. then the AC will come off that saves 33lbs. Also I'll have to get a custom sunroof piece ,weight savings around 20lbs because I'm taking the moter out to. With that stuff I'm pretty close to 2500's. So with coilovers lighter brakes and more grinding I'll try to nudge into the 2400's.

But I dont just tear things out I replace or reduce, very few thing do get chucked like back rear speakers Saved almost 5lbs. Ill buy cefiro headlights and take off fogs ,that will save 10-12lbs.

This is my plan and its going very well.
